Around the world in 5 minutes

As we send out SCALA this month, another tragedy has struck the island nation of Haiti. This country, which has suffered greatly from political and economic distress for so many years and after suffering four hurricanes in 2008, was struch by an earthquake Tuesday evening, January 12, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, causing massive damage in the capitol city of Port-au-Prince.

Most communications are down and we have not heard from our Redemptorist confreres in Haiti yet. Some news reports say that most churches in Port-au-Prince have been destroyed. We will keep you informed and let you know what is happening as soon as information can be obtained from Haiti.

Father General and the new members of the General Council have arrived in Rome. Along with the returning General Council members they will begin their sexenniel duties with a retreat and their first extraordinary meeting during the last half of January. As a result of his election as Superior General, Michael Brehl’s position as Provincial Superior of the Edmonton-Toronto Province has passed to the Vicar General of the Province, Father Mark Miller.

Our sexennial theme of renewed hope, renewed hearts and renewed structures is personified in some recent Redemptorist activities.

Pictured here are the three newly ordained priests of the Dublin province: Fathers Tony Rice, Sean Duggan and Brian Nolan. Cardinal Seán Brady, Primate of All Ireland, officiated at the ordination ceremony. Their ordinations came at a very difficult moment in the Irish Church in the aftermath of official State and Church reports on past sex abuse by Irish clergy and malfeasance in the Irish hierarchy in dealing with it. But these Redemptorist ordinations have been held up to the Irish people as a sign of hope for the future.

Our mission in Kenya recently ordained two confreres. In this growing but fragile area of the Redemptorist apostolate, this too is a great sign of hope.

Remember that each month we list the confreres who have made first profession, perpetual profession, and have been ordained in our Transitions section. Please pray for them as you read their names!

Our restructuring looks towards a more internationlized Redemptorist effort and in one of our international novitiates, in Glenview, IL, USA, four novices received the Redemptorist habit in another sign of hope for the future. The four novices who received the habit, pictured here with Superior General Emeritus Joseph Tobin, are: Marco Limberger (Cologne, Germany); Jacky Merilan (English-speaking region of the Caribbean in the Baltimore Province); Aaron Meszaros (Denver Province); and Larry Lynch (Quebec, Canada). The investiture ceremony marked the halfway point in their novitiate.

Father James Wallace of the Baltimore Province was the 2009 recipient of the Georgetown Center for Liturgy’s award for “Outstanding Contributions to the Liturgical Life of the American Church.” “Father Wallace gets high marks for his ability to bring his wealth of theological knowledge to his presentations in a very accessible form without dumbing down the material,” said Jesuit Father Lawrence J. Madden, the Center’s founder and director. "He has been one of the pioneers as he has dedicated his whole career to the ministry of the Word of God.” The award was presented Dec. 8 at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.. Father Wallace has been a professor of homiletics at the Washington Theological Union since 1986. From 1973-85, he taught homiletics and communications to the majority of present day American Redemptorists at the Redemptorist seminary at Mount St. Alphonsus in Esopus, NY. He is the past president of the Academy of Homiletics, the Catholic Association of Teachers of Homiletics, and the Religious Speech Association. He has served as co-editor of the New Theology Review and as a member of the Editorial Council of the Liturgical Press. He is an author, teacher, and popular presenter. He also is a regular preacher of daily audio homilies featured on www.redemptorists.net.

Father Anthony Russo, C.Ss.R., also of the Baltimore province, but known worldwide for his work among deaf people, was recently twice honored. He was honored with the Lynch Award at the annual Stand Up For Life Dinner sponsored by the Pro-Life Union of Southeastern Pennsylvania. The award is given to a person who has devoted a large part of his or her life to the support and protection of handicapped people. Father Russo has ministered to the deaf community in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for 42 years. He was also recognized for his years of dedicated ministry and friendship toward the deaf community in Wilmington, DE. Wilmington Bishop W. Francis Malooly celebrated Mass, along with several of Fr. Russo's Redemptorist confreres, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine in Greenville, DE.

The Province of Warsaw, Poland recently celebrated their 100th anniversary amidst the anniversary year of the canonization of St. Clement. Father General, Michael Brehl, and General Consultor Jacek Dembek joined the Warsaw province for the festivities. A 20 minute video of an interview with Father Brehl conducted by TV Trwam/Radio Marija is in the media feature of this bulletin below in which Father General shares many of his impressions of the celebration and of the contribution of the Province of Warsaw to the work of the Congregation.

On January 5, the Church celebrated the feast of our own St. John Neumann, a Redemptorist and the fourth bishop of Philadelphia. He is the first male American saint and was responsible, among many other things, for founding the Catholic school system. Philadelphia Cardinal Justin Rigali celebrated a special Mass in the lower church at St. Peter's. The lower church is home to the National Shrine of St. John Neumann. Neumann's feast day in 2010 marks the 150th anniversary of his death. In 2011, Redemptorists will celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Below is a report on the Accademia Alfonsiana, which is late coming to you in SCALA this year due to preparations for the start of the General Chapter that began around the same time as the start of the Academy Year.

Some units of the Congregaton are very active and regular in sending us news about their activities. We are always interested in hearing from ALL the units about activities they wish to share with the entire Congregation through SCALA. Please send your written, recorded or video contributions to GaryZ@cssr.com .

ALPHONSIAN ACADEMY:

Rome
Alphonsian Academy
Academic Year 2009-2010

Due to the General Chapter we have not been able to report to you on the opening of the academic year of the Alphonsianum, which occurred just as the General Chapter was being opened. Here now is the report.

On Friday, October 9, 2009 the solemn opening of the Academic Year 2009-2010 took place with a Eucharist. The main celebrant was then Vicar General Serafino Fiore, C.Ss.R.. The Eucharist took place in the Church of Sant’Alfonso.

After the Eucharist the staff and students gathered in the Aula Magna for the traditional report from the president of the Alphonsianum, Father Martin McKeever. This was followed by a moral presentation by Father Sean Cannon, professor of the Academy, entitled "This is the time to act. The priority of the Church in the protection of minors".

The Academy is actively searching for and enlisting new professors among Redemptorists for the Academy. Three will be added during the 2009-2010 academic year: Nestor Basunga of the Vice Province of Matadi, Alberto De Mingo of the Province of Madrid and Antonio Fidalgo of the Province of Buenos Aires.

First semester exams will be held January 25th to February 5th. The second semester begins on February 10th.

Below is a table of student statistics of the past eight years. A full picture of the activities of the Alphonsianum can be obtained by going to their website at http://www.alfonsiana.edu/
