This month marks the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. There is still much suffering occurring in Haiti as a result of a lack of a comprehensive plan of providing relief and getting relief to where it needs to go. But Regional Superior Adonai Jean-Juste reports that through the kindness of the Irish organization SERVE, which Irish Redemptorist Father Gerry O'Connor serves on the board of directors. they have constructed a temporary house to shelter the regional Redemptorist government and some students. He writes: " [The house] is painted white, has 4 bedrooms, a hall and a kitchen. The electricity is well installed with 7 lights. We use this temporary house for 4 people: Adonai Jean Juste, regional superior, Brother Fritz and the two students Brevil and Mervil. In addition, it receives the students who are studying in Colombia during this time and the ones in Santo Domingo also who are on holiday from their studies in exile. It is very useful for the moment, because, at Saint Gerard, we tried to receive all confreres who came for the regional assembly. It is far from being enough, but it is the best we can do for the moment. We have to leave enough space for the permanent construction that will take place on the site of Bois Patate. We thank SERVE for helping us to pay for the construction. God bless SERVE this new year." There will be a radio documentary on Saint Gerard's school featuring Father Gerry O´Conner and Adonai and children who were in the school at the time of the earthquake; and a girl whose father and step-mother were teachers in the school and who were killed in the earthquake. The documentary, which lasts 38 minutes can be accessed as a podcast on the website at: |
| This past November was the 30th anniversary of the devastating earthquake in south-central Italy that destroyed the old basilica and rectory in Materdomini. In this issue of SCALA is an article that recalls that event, but also shows how Materdomini has recovered and flourishes today. We hope this gives hope to our confreres and people in Haiti as they live through their own slow recovery from the devasation. |
Archbishop Tobin finally knows who the new prefect of the Congregation for Religious will be. It is Archbishop João Bráz de Aviz, 63, of Brazilia, Brazil. Archbishop Bráz formerly served as an auxiliary bishop in Vitória, Espirito Santo, Brazil, then as Ordinary of Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, then as Archbishop of Maringá, Brazil and Brazilia, Distrito Federal, Brazil sucessively. Archbishop Bráz succeeds Cardinal Franc Rodé, C.M. of Slovenia. Archbishop Bráz is not a professed religious.
Please read the announcements in this issue of SCALA. In the last issue of SCALA, the Center for Spirituality announced the dates of the English language course in Italy. This month they announce the dates for the Spanish language course. We also remind you to review the details for World Youth Day 2011, which will be held in Madrid, Spain, and which our Redemptorists in Spain have planned special events.
You will note below that the Region of Mumbai, India has become a Vice Province with the title "Vice Province of Majella." You will also note that the regions and administrations of the former Regions of the Province of St. Clement - Cologne, Netherlands, Flanders and Helvetica - have been suppressed and incorporated into a single administation located in Wittem, Holland of the Province of St. Clement. All correspondence should be directed to the Provincial House in Wittem, Holland.
May the New Year 2011 be a time of preaching the gospel ever anew with…
Grace and Redemption for All!

REMEMBERING THE 1980 ITALIAN EARTHQUAKE:
Italy
Materdomini
Editor's note: 30 years ago this past November, southern Italy and especially our community at Materdomini was struck by an earthquake. The following article recalls the tragedy. The photos that accompany this article tell the story of death and resurrection of the old Basilica of St. Gerard at Materdomini. It is also worthy to note that this event was the catalyst for and inauguration of our various print and electronic monthly Redemptorist news bulletins that have continued bringing you the news of Redemptorists around the world. They were begun in November 1980 by Father John Ruef, General Consultor and head of the Secretariat for Communications at the time, to report on the earthquake damage and relief efforts for Materdomini.
We have communities today in Haiti and Chile that are still suffering the ravages and aftermath of earthquakes. May this article once again bring them to our attention and prayers, and be words of hope for a better future for them just as Materdomini has so wondrously recovered and flourished from its own tragedy.
Ninety interminable seconds. It was the apocalypse, that bloody Sunday, November 23, 1980. At 19:34 a quake of magnitude 6.9 on the Richter scale devastated southern central Italy. An earthquake of biblical proportions: 2,914 victims, 9,000 injured, 280,000 displaced persons. And the effects were aggravated by the delay in quake relief. "Hurry," was the famous headline of the newspaper Mattino. And even then-President of the Republic, Sandro Pertini, complained: "There is no immediate relief that there should be." From the rubble rose groans and cries of despair of those buried alive.

What will remain indelible are a few moments experiencing railings blocking and restricting access to the steps out of a house to safety, chandeliers swaying, the exodus of relatives gathering for shelter in one room of a still-standing farmhouse. And holding Mass in a prefabricated zinc building.
Today there are still shadows, Thirty years after the earthquake reconstruction is not yet finished. In Basilicata another 600 million euros are needed after a government funding of over € 2 billion and a half over the years. And the figures speak for themselves of the recovery: Of 900 companies that existed at the time, today only thirty survive. The rest victim to the fits and starts of recovery. That's why self congratulatory celebrations seem entirely out of place by Basilicata regional politicians. But there were truly honorable and hardworking exceptions among the administrators of the earthquake period that need to be acknowledged too.
Some areas, such as Satriano di Lucania (Potenza), have literally been put back up with uncommon transparency and competence. We cannot forget the sense of brotherhood among the survivors or the aid that arrived from all of Italy (especially by the inhabitants of Friuli, affected by the earthquake of 1976) and from abroad, even from the U.S.A. It was the wave of solidarity following the earthquake in Irpinia and Basilicata that gave birth to the Civil Protection forces in Italy.
Two days after the disaster, Pope John Paul II came to the epicenter of the pain, Balvano (Potenza). In this small area, the collapse of the church led to the deaths of 66 people, mostly children. Time cannot erase the hurt of those who lost their children and loved ones. But as Benedict XVI said to the survivors of the L'Aquila quake in 2009, expect to see the dead revive their land. And in their name, "we must commit to live again, tapping into what the earthquake can not destroy: Love."

USA |
In 1836, a young seminarian named John Neumann arrived in the U.S. from his native Bohemia. He left his family in the dead of night to become a missionary in America. His one goal was to bring the love of God to forgotten and neglected souls.
He joined the Redemptorists in 1842, and in 1852, at the age of 41, he was named the fourth bishop of Philadelphia. In the eight short years before his death, Neumann built almost 90 churches, founded the nation's parochial school system, established several religious orders, and defended the Catholic faith in a hostile climate.
On January 5, 2011, the feast of St. John Neumann, the Redemptorists opened the Neumann Year, which will end on June 23, 2012. Philadelphia Cardinal Justin Rigali celebrated the opening Mass on the feast day at the saint's shrine in St. Peter's Church in Philadelphia. A parish-wide celebration will be held January 9, 2011.
Several events are planned throughout the Neumann Year to share with the world his message of faith, education, and charity. Some activities include monthly Saturday retreats at the Shrine of St. John Neumann, special parish missions and evenings of recollection preached by Redemptorist missionaries in parishes throughout the East Coast, and an essay contest for Catholic middle- and high-school students.
"The witness of his life speaks in a particular way to our own age," said former Baltimore Provincial Patrick Woods. "As political battles are waged about undocumented immigrants and our borders, we think of our saint who was a zealous pastor to waves of immigrants.
"St. John Neumann lived in an age of fierce anti-Catholicism; today, we face a spirit-sapping secularism. Educating our young people is a great challenge for us today as it was for the founder of the parochial school system," Woods said.
During the Neumann Year, the Redemptorists especially encourage pilgrimages to the Shrine of St. John Neumann. The Shrine includes the body of St. John Neumann, as well as several relics and artifacts.
| "The Shrine is a place of serenity, a place of holiness, and a place where St. John Neumann, in his love and dedication for people of all nationalities, races, and even religions, still intercedes and blesses God's people," said Very Rev. Kevin Moley, former pastor of St. Peter's Church and director of the Shrine of St. John Neumann and now Provincial Superior. "God still uses one of his humble servants in so many miraculous ways. We are very blessed in having with us this great Redemptorist, Bishop, and Saint." | ![]() |

It is in weakness that there is power" (Phil.4:13), and it is in weakness that we feel the need of other people.

It has been public knowledge for some days that the Cota 905 road is broken in two sections due to the abundant currents of water caused by the rains. Cars are not getting through and for this reason El Paraíso is congested.
There have been landslides on the road which connects el Tanque and el Paraíso districts and where the Cota 905 road meets the la Quinta sector, which have made any sort of vehicular access difficult. The chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help has served as a shelter. Whilst we await in the hope of an improvement to the situation, we are helping people, for which we need food and mattresses. We especially hope that the various government organizations will step in and re-locate these people.
With the advent of the rains which fell all day on Monday the 29th November, those affected began to arrive at the school and the chapel during the evening. Between the school and the chapel, about 300 people spent that night and the whole of the next day with us. On the Tuesday night, most of these people were moved to government-organized shelters. Most people are staying at the Mario Briceño School, the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmel and the Sacred Heart Chapel.
Since Wednesday 1st December, we have been helping about 130 people, and another group is staying at the Sacred Heart Chapel, though they continue to keep an eye on their homes and belongings, given that there have been small outbreaks of violence. After a week had gone by, there were still people staying at the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmel, the Sacred Heart Chapel, the Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and at the Mario Briceño School. At the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmel there are about 70 children and approximately 50 adults. The situation has become difficult there because the conditions do not lend themselves to hosting these people for a prolonged period of time - children especially - who have been getting sick, and there has already been an outbreak of fever. There is only one bathroom, which is used by everyone, and there is no room to look after more people. |
![]() |
It is a similar situation at the other shelters, and in the whole city there is no place to move all these people to. The response of the government agencies in the face of the problem has been inadequate. All we can do is wait and see what action they will take.
For now, our chapels are serving as shelters to all these people, and we continue to be with them, helping them so that, above all, they do not feel neglected or abandoned by us.
Through all this, Fr. Nermis has been leading from the front, together with the Redemptorist community and committed lay people of the Barrio.
We would like to give thanks to all the people of the Barrio, and the work that has been done by the residents association, the Head of the Mario Briceño School, our helpers and catechists, our Philosophy house of formation, the representatives of the Mayor's Office who have been helping us, and for the help afforded to us by the Pedagogical Institute of Caracas (IPC), and the Parish and Foundation of St Alphonsus in prayer.

Latin American Congress of Redemptorist Brothers (CLAHER)
Félix Catalá, C.Ss.R.
The VIII Latin American Congress of Redemptorist Brothers (CLAHER) took place in San José, Costa Rica from December 6 to 10, 2010. 23 brothers and 5 priests took part. Amongst them was Fr. Enrique López and Br. Jeffrey Rolle, from the General Council, Fr. Félix Catalá from the Center for Redemptorist Spirituality, Fr. José Rafael Nieto, Provincial of Ecuador, and Fr. José Araya Chavarría, Vice-Provincial of Central America. Fr. Araya’s care and welcome to us on behalf of the Vice-Province during these days was outstanding, as was his excellent planning, which was characterized by many kind personal gestures towards us. Br. João Batista de Viveiros, of the Province of São Paulo, Brazil, facilitated the sessions with tact and expertise. The fraternal atmosphere, sincere sharing and enthusiastic participation of the group made for a fruitful and encouraging meeting.
Focusing on the theme of the Sexenium, many key questions were discussed: The restructuring of the Congregation, and the Brothers’ participation in this process; personal and community self-esteem, and the role of community discernment in the aforementioned restructuring; the call to live a prophetic apostolic life, and the identity of the Redemptorist as "brother" in his following of Jesus Christ; the challenges of religious life in Latin America, following on from the ‘Global Plan’ developed by the Latin American Conference of Religious (CLAR); Finally, the formation of the Redemptorist Brother in Latin America.
The sharing that took place in both small groups and in the plenary sessions generated stimulating and profitable discussions, which all expect to bear fruit in the apostolic life of the units represented. Serious challenges still present themselves in the Congregation, such as clericalism. However, the participants concluded that these are being faced with hope and a real spirit of conversion. In fact, the call to conversion stood out as the underlying theme for all the processes which we are undertaking in the restructuring of both our apostolic lives and our Units.
The Closing Declaration, ‘Only let us hold fast to what we have attained’ (Phil 3:16), stresses the call to deepen our own consecration as Redemptorists on the new road which the Congregation is traveling, in this way advancing our fundamental missionary calling.
The next Latin American Congress of Redemptorist Brothers, CLAHER
IX, is scheduled for December 8 to 14, 2013.

Spain Province of Madrid World Youth Day Information |
The Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid has given us some guidelines to be followed. All the groups of young people who come to Madrid must do so as part of the groups from their own respective dioceses; it is at the diocesan level that they must register for the event. It is the Archdiocese of Madrid which will make available to the various groups of young people the hospitality for the diocesan celebration (August 11 – 15) and the World Youth Day (August 16 – 21).
It would only be in the case of absolute impossibility of someone coming with their own diocese that we would look at the possibility of registering them through one or the other of our Redemptorist parishes in Madrid. If this situation occurred, one would have to contact the Coordinator for the Province of Madrid named below.
There are plans for a Redemptorist Day, which would take place on Friday, August 19, in our school of Gamo Diana, next to the parish of San Gerardo in Madrid. On that day all the Redemptorists and all our young people will gather with our Superior General, Father Michael Brehl.
For the days after the meeting (August 21 through 25) the Province of Madrid is making its houses available to the whole Congregation in order to welcome the young people who wish to get to know something of our Spanish cities. We don't have many accommodations to offer, but what we have we are placing at the disposition of all. It would be necessary, however, to reserve soon the number of rooms you are going to need in order to distribute them to the various groups who request them.
The communities available for these visits of young people are:
Perpetuo Socorro (Madrid), Santissimo Redentor (Madrid), San Gerardo
(Madrid), Granada, Valencia, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Pamplona, Santander,
El Espino (Burgos), Vigo, Astorga, Salamanca and Mérida.
It is necessary to make arrangements for transportation to these various cities as soon as possible because all the transportation options will be in high demand. Hospitality for Redemptorist priests and brothers themselves who will be in Madrid during this time will take place in the communities of Perpetuo Socorro and Santissimo Redentor.
In Madrid a central commission has been named to coordinate the various
tasks that must be done: volunteers, hospitality, Redemptorist Day,
and days of relaxation. The general coordinator is Father Jorge Ambel
(jorgeambel@cssr.es). Postal
address: C/ Manuel Silvela 14, 28010 Madrid España. Telephone:
00 34 915913654. The commission needs all the necessary information
before February 28, 2011.
I ask that all this information be passed on to those responsible for Redemptorist Young Adult and Youth Ministry in your unit in order that good coordination will happen from the beginning. With my best wishes to all.

We guarantee we will do all possible to facilitate participation by members of your unit. We are unable to cover the costs of travel as our budget is limited.
We ask that you inform us as soon as possible about who will be attending the workshop. Also please send us the e-mail address of each of the participants. The participants should be in Rome no later than July 2, 2011, and should leave no earlier than July 25.
