MESSAGE FROM SUPERIOR GENERAL MICHAEL BREHL, C.SS.R.
Dear Confreres, Sisters, Associates and friends,
In this first edition of Scala for 2012, I would like to wish you a blessed New Year filled with the hope, peace and joy which are signs of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and ministry!
In the first two weeks of January, we celebrated the feasts of two great Redemptorist missionaries – St. John Neumann and Blessed Peter Donders. Their lives and their example continue to inspire us in our mission to preach the Gospel ever anew. Through their prayerful intercession, they continue to accompany us as we live our missionary vocation today.
 |
St. John Neumann cultivated a spirit of missionary dedication from the beginning of his vocation to serve God and God’s people as a priest. It was this missionary spirit which shaped his life. In this spirit he left home and country to travel to the United States. This spirit drew him to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. In this spirit, he accompanied literally thousands of new immigrants.
For John Neumann, this missionary spirit was not a romantic ideal but a practical call to concrete action. This missionary vocation was expressed in his efforts to learn other languages so that he could effectively communicate with men and women affected by the mass movement of people. In this spirit, he established parishes and schools, preached missions and assisted the poor. His missionary vocation found expression in the choices and decisions which shaped his life, his community, and his ministry. |
May this spirit continue to urge us to follow the Redeemer in concrete and practical ways as we continue to renew our Congregation according to the orientations of the XXIV General Chapter and the theme of the
Sexennium: To preach the Gospel ever anew – with renewed hope, renewed
hearts and renewed structures for mission.
 |
The life of Blessed Peter Donders was also
shaped by his missionary vocation. Like St. John Neumann, he
was ordained as a diocesan priest. Like John Neumann, he left
home and country to minister in the Americas. After almost 25
years of ministry in Surinam, he entered the Congregation of
the Most Holy Redeemer when the Redemptorists were entrusted
with the mission in this country
.In Surinam, he was available to all – but he experienced a special call to serve the poor, the slaves and those who were abandoned. For almost thirty years, he served the needs of the lepers at Batavia. The special mark of the missionary vocation of Peter Donders was his closeness to the people to whom he was sent. This closeness was expressed not only through preaching |
and celebrating the sacraments, but also through his personal service of those in need. Not only did he work for structural change to provide better medical care and education for the lepers – he also nursed them and tenderly cared for them.
As a Redemptorist missionary, he continued to seek new ways to serve others even in his advanced years. He began to learn native languages so that he could bring the gospel to the native peoples. He also established structures to assist others to continue what he had begun. Like St. John Neumann, the missionary spirit and inspiring life of Peter Donders are relevant for Redemptorist missionaries today.
May St. John Neumann and Blessed Peter Donders continue to accompany us as we strive in 2012 to bring the Good News to the Poor!
Once again, I would like to wish you every grace and blessing for the New Year.
In the Redeemer,
Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R.

From the Editor's Rome Notebook |
We hope that you had a blessed Christmas and this New Year of 2012 will be abundant in blessings and pastoral fruitfulness for you.
 |
This year the Congregation celebrates a special
Alphonsian anniversary. It will be the 250th anniversary of St.
Alphonsus’ episcopal ordination. As you know, Alphonsus was a
very reluctant bishop. So was St. John Neumann. Since our founder
reluctantly became a bishop on June 20, 1762, 152 other Redemptorists
have been called to the episcopal ministry. Most often, they have
been called to serve in the poorer missionary areas of the world
- not in any way considered an ecclesiastical “award”. Five confreres
have been made Cardinals in our history. All our bishops and Cardinals
have been models of pastoral zeal. |
Another Neapolitan in the Alphonsian lineage, Bishop Antonio De Luca,
became the latest Redemptorist bishop – and the 22nd from the Province
of Naples in the history of the Congregation. He was ordained bishop
on January 7th. Archbishop Tobin was a co-consecrator. Cardinal Crescenzio
Sepe of the Archdiocese of Naples was the principal consecrator. [See
below for an account and photos of the episcopal ordination.]
Presently, there are 52 living Redemptorist bishops. In upcoming editions of SCALA, we hope to bring some historical, pastoral, and personal perspectives on St. Alphonsus’ anniversary and the role of a Redemptorist bishop in the Church.
In this issue of SCALA you will find the year-end statistics of
the world-wide Congregation, a special anniversary celebrated by Radio
Maryja of the Province of Warsaw, and some programs you will want
to be aware of and participate in if you have the opportunity.
Don’t forget that every issue we publish the upcoming Jubilees of confreres. This enables you to think of them, pray for them, and perhaps send a word of congratulations.
Grace and Redemption for All!

Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Antonio De Luca, C.Ss.R.
Luis Alberto Roballo. C.Ss.R.
 |
The Cathedral of Naples, no stranger to grand celebrations, was overflowing at the Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Antonio De Luca, C.Ss.R., the soon-to-be installed bishop of Teggiano-Policastro. The ceremony began at 5 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2012.
The Ordination was presided over by Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Archbishop of Naples, and co-consecrators Archbishop Joseph William Tobin, C.Ss.R., Secretary for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and Archbishop Angelo Spinillo, Bishop of Aversa, and former Bishop and Apostolic Administrator of Teggiano-Policastro.
Forty other bishops took part in the ceremony: Present were
the Apostolic Nuncio of Italy, Archbishop Adriano Bernardini
and Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio from India, the two bishops
emeriti of Teggiano-Policastro, two bishops of Madagascar, the
only other living Redemptorist Neapolitan bishop, Antonio Napoletano,
C.Ss.R ., bishop of Sessa Aurunca (Caserta), as well as members
of the Italian Episcopal Conference and various Church Departments
and Institutions. |
Participating as concelebrants were about 250 priests, diocesan and
religious. Present also were a very large amount of religious men
and women who Bishop De Luca has worked with as Naples’ Episcopal
Pro-Vicar for Consecrated Life since 2007. The Redemptorists had a
special presence with over 60 confreres, including the Vicar General,
Father Enrique Lopez and General Consultors Juventius Andrade and
Jeffrey Rolle. Also present were the Provincials of Naples and Rome,
Fathers Davide Perdonò and Giovanni Congiu respectively, the Rector
of the General House himself a member of the Province of Naples, Father
Luciano Panella, and many other priests and brothers of the province
of Naples, the General House and other Redemptorist foundations from
around Italy.
Civil and military authorities and representatives of the social and cultural life of Naples such as the mayors of all Teggiano-Policastro locations occupied much of the section of the cathedral next to the famous chapel of St. Januarius.
Many delegations were present from Bishop De Luca’s birthplace of Torre del Greco, as well as representatives from all the parishes in his diocese.

In his homily Cardinal Sepe mentioned the baptism of
Christ as the arrival time of the Spirit of the Lord and the initiation
of Jesus’ ministry, and stressed the Redemptorist missionary vocation
in the same home city of St. Alphonsus Liguori and the region of St.
Gerard Majella and implored the blessings of Christ, the Shepherd
of the Flock, promising his solidarity with the Diocese and also invoking
the protection of St. Alphonsus. In his thanksgiving discourse, Bishop
De Luca reiterated these same themes. Other Redemptorist touches were
the singing of O bella mia speranza and inclusion of the
Perpetual Help icon in the participation book distributed to all.
Inside the Cathedral and in the surrounding neighborhood of the San Gregorio Armeno sector were the famous Neapolitan Christmas cribs with figurines of the familiar characters of the Nativity accounts of Jesus’ birth mixed with contemporary representations of sports, politics, showbiz and everyday life figurines. In this context is framed the episcopal motto of Bishop De Luca: "Dum adnuntietur Christus omni mode", "For Christ is proclaimed in all ways" (Philippians 1.18).
In the Litany of the Saints, Redemptorists heard unfamiliar names
of saints such as San Pietro Pappacarbone and San Cono,
just as many Italians invoked for the first time the names of Saints
such as John Neumann, Vasyl Charnetsky and Mykolay Velychkovsky.
The solemnity of the celebration gave honor to the artistic and musical talents of Naples and ended with warm, spontaneous gratitude from all present.

Bishop Antonio De Luca will take possession of the diocese of Teggiano-Policastro
on February 4, in Teggiano, which sits on a beautiful hill overlooking
the Valley of Diano with historical ruins that date back to the 4th
century B.C. and the seat of the diocese since1986. The area of Policastro
is noteworthy as the area of pastoral service rendered by another
Redemptorist bishop in the second half of the 19th century, Dom Nicola
Laudisio. The diocese has 81 parishes (c.f. www.paradhosis.it)
We implore the same blessing upon Bishop De Luca as he bestowed upon his diocese in his first message to it: “May St. Alphonsus Liguori, founder of the Redemptorist Congregation and St. Gerard, so well-known here and especially revered, hold me and guide our steps on the path of holiness. "

Poland
Province of Warsaw
Radio Maryja
On December 8, 2011, Radio Maryja founded by the Redemptorists
of the Province of Warsaw, celebrated its 20th anniversary. Pope Benedict
XVI, through Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (Vatican Secretary of State),
wrote a letter. In his message the Holy Father addressed all Redemptorists
working in Radio Maryja together with all the volunteers and the immense
group of supporters. He described quite accurately the purpose of
Radio Maryja and its past and present-day mission.
Recently, Father General, Michel Brehl, gave an interview to Nasz Dziennik (a daily newspaper collaborating with Radio Maryja). In his interview Father General said that the use of modern instruments of communication allow us to respond efficiently to the heritage given us by St. Clement: to preach the good news in a new way and respond to the signs of time.
Radio Maryja is the fifth largest broadcaster in Poland today. Every day approximately 1 to 1.5 million people listen to Radio Maryja.
Following is the text of the Vatican’s letter:
Message of Pope Benedict XVI on the occasion of 20 anniversary of Radio Maria
To the Reverend Father Janusz Sok, C.Ss.R., Provincial of the Warsaw Province of the Redemptorists
+Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone
Secretary of State
From the Vatican, December 1, 2011
 |
The Holy Father Benedict XVI, spiritually united to the participants of the 20th anniversary of Radio Maria, sends through me, and through the hands of Father Provincial, a greeting and apostolic blessing to the Founder and Director of Radio Maryja, Father Tadeusz Rydzyk, all ecclesiastical and lay employees, volunteers and those who by this Catholic station strive to reinforce the people’s faith on their journey to an encounter with God.
Radio Maria was erected by the Bishop of Chelmno on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8, 1991 in Toruń. At that time - not an easy one for your country and marking the end of the system that denied freedom of speech and imposed a monopoly on information - it was appropriate to consider the creation of new Catholic media that would reach everyone with the message of salvation and with honest information. |
| So too were the thoughts of Blessed John Paul II, who said: "Great is the need today to proclaim the Gospel in our country. People need a real word, a word that builds and does not divide, that inspires courage in hearts that are afraid; of a clear and simple word, bearing love and truth. This word is a message of salvation, it is Christ himself. A word that you are the heralds of "(General Audience, 23.3.1994). The Pope, your countryman, also said: "I am grateful for Radio Maria’s committment, multifaceted and full of dedication, to the apostolate of the word, that is now so important and so necessary in our country" (Audience for Radio Maria, 18.04. 1996). |
 |
 |
He himself gave your radio to the protection of Mary, Patroness of your radio, in the following words: "All of you, and your apostolate, I entrust to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom we venerate as the Star of Evangelization (...). Mary, Star of Evangelization, guide us! Guide Radio Maria and be its patron "(General Audience, 23.3.1994);" May Mary, Star of the New Evangelization, lead your radio to encountering new people and new times "(Pilgrimage to Poland, Toruń , 07/07/1999).
In the spirit of that reliance and determination to be faithful
to the Magisterium of the Church and her Bishops, Radio Maria
has been able, despite the difficulties, to fruitfully carry
out its activities in Poland and abroad, sowing the seeds of
the word in the hearts of the people. After twenty years of
unbroken activities in various forms, one can see the abundant
fruit of this seeding. First, by means of radio transmission,
one can experience the encounter with God through prayer and
catechesis, the "two essential elements that distinguish
a Catholic radio station from all other stations." (Audience
for Radio Maria, 16/10/1997): |
Every day is transmitted Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, the Angelus,
the Rosary, the Litany of Divine Mercy, the "Call to Our Lady
of Czestochowa," the Breviary the popular Madonna "Godzinki"
and other periodic prayers such as the "Zale Gorzkie".The
daily catechesis is enriched with the participation of bishops, and
the unbreakable bond with the Apostolic See is expressed through the
broadcasts of the Holy Father’s international travels, his General
Audience on Wednesdays, the SundayAngelus, information from Vatican
Radio and important events in the life of the Holy See and the Church
Universal. In addition, there is the magazine Octava Dies Vatican
and the Holy Land News newsletter.
The Holy Father Benedict XVI appreciates the fact that thanks to Radio Maryja and Television TRWAM, his apostolic journeys, the Wednesday audiences and other Papal programs can be followed live in Poland, translated into the Polish language. It is an important contribution to the spread of the mission of Peter in your country and among your fellow countrymen abroad.
Not without significance are the Christian-social activities of your radio. The Community dimension is known and religiously significant to the listeners of Radio Maria, families, young people and, in particular, the unique and extraordinary phenomenon of the "Court of the Rosary Circles" which brings together about 150 thousand children in different parts of the world, expressing their love to the Mother of the Savior through a regular, daily recitation of the Rosary. To support the training of young journalists and Catholic works for 10 years now, in Toruń, the School of Social and Media Culture, as well as the well known newspaper in Poland. |
 |
 |
Radio Maria on pilgrimage travels the roads of the country, broadcasting Masses and other liturgical moments from many shrines, parishes and dioceses, following events in the life of the Church in Poland. The listeners of Radio Maria take part on pilgrimaged to Czestochowa, Rome and the so-called "American Czestochowa" in the State of Pennsylvania. A specific feature of radio is the fact that everyone can take part in open discussion programs – “talk radio”- participating by telephone call-ins.
Let us also mention the scientific circles, and the cultural and social issues guests linked to Radio Maria, who speak out clearly in favor of the moral teaching of the Catholic Church in defense of life, from conception to natural death, and speak to the defense of the family, between man and woman blessed by God and to the Christian education of children. |
The above-mentioned forms of religious education influence a large number of listeners and, in particular, the disabled, sick or elderly who can not attend personally the pastoral programs of their dioceses or parishes. These activities constitute a significant contribution to the evangelizing mission of the Church in Poland and remain consistent with the path of the New Evangelization, annunciated by the Magisterium of the Church.
To close, I want to quote the words of Blessed Pope John Paul II, your countryman, who addressed them to you during one of your pilgrimages to Rome: "May your Radio serve to spread real information, imbued with love and based on justice! To contribute to the formation of consciences in the spirit of Christ's teaching "(General Audience, 23.03. 1994).
The Holy Father Benedict XVI, thanks you for your dedicated twenty years of evangelization through the media and asks God, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Patroness of Radio Maria, that this work of spreading the faith in human conscience, guided by the Redemptorists of Poland around the world, can bring victory of good over evil and contribute to the well-being of many Christians and the people of your country.
In this spirit, I also participate in the joy of your anniversary and greet all the participants on this festive occasion and all radio and television listeners. |
