On the night of May 12th an electrical fire was found in the lower Church of St. Peter’s, Philadelphia, USA – The National Shrine to St. John Neumann. Thanks be to God, no one was hurt nor was the body of St. John Neumann affected in anyway. The fire appears to have been in the wiring in the floor and near the pulpit, which, unfortunately, did get burnt. Some marble and flooring had to be pulled up so the firefighters could make sure the fire was put out. There is also some possible smoke damage to the Church, but it does not appear to be major. The fire department said it was miraculous that greater damage did not occur to the entire Church and to the body of St. John Neumann.
The final two regional pre-General Chapter meetings, Latin America and North America, were held in May. The Preparatory Commission for the General Chapter just concluded its meeting in Rome to synthesize the results and pass on its recommendations to the General Council for their decisions at the extraordinary meeting going on at this moment. In preparation for the start of the General Chapter on October 19, 2009, you will be seeing additional information, documentation and communications added to our General Chapter website available on www.cssr.com in the area reserved for Redemptorists under the XXIV General Chapter menu item. You will need the user name and password to enter this area.
During the Latin American pre-chapter meeting in Alajuela, Costa Rica, the Redemptorists capitulars joined with Father General in sending a letter of support to Cardinal Julio Terrazas, C.Ss.R., joining their voices with others, including Pope Benedict, in condemning the bombing of his residence in April. They expressed their solidarity with Cardinal Julio and pledged their support in building a kingdom of peace and justice, which the Lord has commissioned us to do.
| We are in a season of academic accomplishment and honors. The following Redemptorists have recently been honored:
Father José Domingos Silva Ferreira, C.Ss.R., from the Vice Province of Recife, successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at the Alphonsianum on May 11, 2009 in the Dissertation Defense Room of the Academy. Fathers Martin McKeever, Rafael Gallagher (Dublin) and Andrzej Wodka (Warsaw) were the moderators. His dissertation is entitled ¨Rostro e Responsabilidade: A Ética da Alteridade em Emmanuel Lévinas: Uma Aproximação á América Latina. Following the defense, a festive supper was held in his honor in the dining room of Casa Sant´Alfonso. Domingos will now return to Recife with doctorate in hand. Congratulations to Rev. Dr. Domingos! |

Father Bruno Primetshofer, C.Ss.R. from the Province of Vienna, received an honorary doctorate in Theology from the Catholic Theological Private University in Linz - the provincial capital of Upper Austria - for the promotion of and his outstanding scientific achievements and teachings in the field of Canon Law. The festive ceremony took place on May 25, 2009 at Linz. A great number of officials of the federal province as well as the diocese of Linz were present, among them the Bishop of Linz, Ludwig Schwarz, SDB, and the provincial governor of Upper Austria, Dr. Josef Pühringer, who was his student in the early seventies.
Fr. Primetshofer was born in 1929 and entered the Congregation in 1948, making his final profession in 1952. He was ordained a priest in 1954. He studied canon law at the Lateran University in Rome, where he earned a doctorate "summa cum laude".
His doctoral thesis published in 1960 was awarded the Cardinal Innitzer Prize for outstanding scholarship. From 1958-1968 he taught canon law at the Redemptorist major seminary at Mautern, Styria, and from 1966 on he taught canon law at the then newly established University for Social Sciences and Economics in Linz, where he was made Ordinarius of Canon Law in 1972.
Ten years later he was called to the University of Vienna, where he taught Canon Law until he became emeritus in 1997. Congratulations to Professor emeritus, Rev. Dr., Dr. h.c. Bruno Primetshofer, C.Ss.R.!

On May 22, 2009, the University of San Francisco in the United States awarded Bishop Kevin Dowling an honorary doctorate in Humanities at their commencement ceremonies for his work in drawing attention to the millions in South Africa and around the world who are living with HIV/AIDS and to cultivate a climate of understanding and compassion about the social justice and ethical issues surrounding the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
In accepting the honorary degree Father Dowling told the graduating students: “ The invitation to be here today as part of your graduation, and to receive an honorary degree is a great privilege and gift in my life, and I want to express my deep appreciation and thanks to all of you and to this University. This honor is also recognition of the more than 200 community workers with whom I minister in the HIV programs we run in conditions of extreme poverty.”
Congratulations to Bishop Dowling! |
The year 2009 marks a significant anniversary in Poland. On June 4, 2009 Poland celebrated the 20th anniversary of its first free elections. Communism was defeated. Thirty years ago this month, Pope John Paul II made his first visit to Poland and rallied the Solidarnosc (Solidarity union movement). The Solidarnosc strikes in 1980 began a new era in Poland. The government responded with martial law, but change was unstoppable. The so-called round table, where all the socio-political forces in the country gathered for talks and the subsequent elections in Poland in 1989 led to the fall of the communist government and, in domino fashion, other communist governments behind the Iron Curtain.
 |
The Warsaw Province Redemptorists lived these changes. On June 4 2009, in Gdansk, one particular Redemptorist, Father Edward Ryba, C.Ss.R., received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta from Polish president Lech Kaczynski for his social commitment and courage in the days of "Solidarity" in the 1980’s. "For Father Edward, it was a joyous reunion with union members who always show him their great appreciation and gratitude," said Father Marek Mirus C.Ss.R., a witness to the ceremony. Congratulations to Father Ryba!
Redemptorists from Clapham Common were there to support Vice Province of Bangkok missionary Father Joe Maier’s Human Development Foundation when it opened a supporting Foundation in England on May 21. The opening ceremonies were held at the Royal Thai Embassy in London, with Ambassador Kitti Wasinondh cutting the ribbon. |

Lay Missionaries Complete Their Formation
Miguel Garcia, C.Ss.R.
On Thursday, April 23, during our Provincial Chapter, we held a concelebrated Eucharist and supper at Casa Cristo Redentor in Aguas Buenas to celebrate the closing of three years of formation for Puerto Rican lay people. They have been aspiring to be Lay Missionaries of the Most Holy Redeemer. Fathers Miguel A. Garcia and Jose Checchia have accompanied this beautiful group of men and women for three years. They have provided them with a formation that is biblical-theological as well as a formation in the charism and spirituality of Redemptorists. The lay missionaries have also been involved in missionary experiences.
Father Felipe Santiago, the Provincial Superior, presided at the Eucharist and preached, congratulating these lay people and encouraging them to be a missionary force in the life of the Province. At the end of the Eucharist the group of 36 were given a diploma certifying their formation and recognizing the call that God has given them to share in the charism of the Congregation.
The 36 new lay missionaries come from seven different localities in Puerto Rico. They are a hope for our province. Among them are various couples, single people, a widow, married and retired. This community of lay people has a great readiness for service and missionary work. They possess a great deal of talent which will be given to the service of the poorest.
We see this as a moment of grace for the Province of San Juan. It goes without saying that all of us from the Province take most seriously this challenge which God offers us through these new lay missionaries.

Centennial of the celebration of the feast of St. Benedict the Moor
José Bertanha, C.Ss.R.
The parish of Our Lady of Aparecida, which is under the pastoral care of the Province of São Paulo, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the feast of St. Benedict the Moor, on April 20, 2009, preceded by a solemn novena April 12 to 19. In the beginning of the last century, the German Redemptorists, having arrived from the Province of Munich to care for the Sanctuary and parish of Our Lady of Aparecida, understood that it was necessary to promote a local religiosity of the people. Immediately they observed that a large percentage of the Brazilian population, descendents of Africans, had a great devotion to St. Benedict the Moor, son of African slaves, born in Palermo, Sicily, and patron saint of cooks.
Beginning in 1909, the annual celebration of the life of the saint has always included a solemn novena, Masses, special preaching, and varied processions led by national folkdancers from the Congo and Mozambique, who sing and dance to an Afro-Brazilian rhythm. There are other important symbolic roles that are part of the feast in the style of a royal court: King and Queen, standard and crown bearers, a standard bearer captain, and diverse princes, princesses and courtiers. The theme of the Feast of 2009 was: “São Benedict: 100 year of faith, devotion and culture.” During the day, large mascots such as “João Paulino” and “Maria Angu”, entertained the children. At night, what followed the celebration of the novena was the animated outdoor celebration, complete with local foods, games and musical shows, presented by popular artists.
The main events held on the 19th: Celebration of a Congolese Mass (Afro-Brazilian rhythm), procession and blessing of the Standard, and procession of the Cavalry of Saint Benedict.
On the 20th, Feast day of Saint Benedict: Solemn Mass, celebrated by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Aparecida, Dom Raymundo Damasceno Assis, followed by the distribution of sweets for the devotees. The centenary feast ended with the Great Procession, represented by more than 120 Congolese and Mozambique groups.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help
Feastday, June 27th
In the month of June we celebrate the Feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. The Congregation is already looking forward to the 150th anniversary in 2016 of Pope Pius IX giving the icon to the Redemptorists and the mandate to spread devotion to her. We are all familiar with our famous shrine to Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Baclaran, Philippines. But here is some little known news from North America that further demonstrates we are fulfilling that mandate to make her known throughout the world. If you have a story to tell about Our Mother of Perpetual Help in your unit, please send it to me at GaryZ@csssr.com for inclusion in SCALA.
Father Pat Woods, the provincial of Baltimore writes: In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, the icon will be installed in the Archdiocesan Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 13th by Cardinal Justin Rigali. Cardinal Rigali has shown great interest in the Redemptorists both as archbishop first of Saint Louis and then of Philadelphia. When he comes to Rome, he almost always pays a visit to the Church of San Alfonso and visits the icon. Cardinal Rigali has also shown great interest in the shrine of St. John Neumann and has been present at the Shrine of St. John Neumann at St. Peter's Church numerous times. The Cardinal was most supportive in redressing the body of St. John Neumann in 19th century vestments. Additionally, the Cardinal helped have a window honoring Blessed Francis Seelos installed at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C.
 |
When the Redemptorists, in mutual agreement with the Archdiocese, closed St. Boniface Church in Philadelphia, we were aware that the Church possessed many beautiful liturgical items that went back to the 19th century. There were magnificent statutes, altars, stained glass, stations of the cross, and pews. Father Alfred Bradley, vicar of the Baltimore Province and a native of Philadelphia, worked tirelessly to ensure that these sacred materials would find suitable places of worship. Cardinal Rigali expressed great interest in having two of the side altars for the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul and the Redemptorists agreed to donate them as a gift from the Redemptorists and parishioners of St. Boniface. The Cardinal decided to place the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help that came from St. Boniface over one of the new altars in the Cathedral. He has also commissioned a statue of St. John Neumann for the Cathedral. |
 |
 |
St. Boniface had an exquisite marble statue of St. Alphonsus, that Cardinal Rigali, at his own expense, had placed near the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. The Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province are most grateful to Cardinal Rigali for his kindness to our community and his deep love of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Alphonsus, St. John Neumann, and Blessed Seelos.
|
| In a recent television news interview with newly installed Archbishop of New York, Timothy Dolan, an icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was predominately displayed just behind him. Archbishop Dolan is a native of Saint Louis, Missouri, where the Redemptorists at the Rock Church spread devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help throughout the whole region. Many churches in St. Louis display the icon and conduct the weekly novena due to the zeal of Redemptorist missionaries. Asked about the icon, Archbishop Dolan responded that his devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help arose from his childhood at Holy Infant Parish in Ballwin, Missouri (a suburb of St. Louis), and their weekly novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. That instilled in him his devotion to her. |
 |
Did you know that in Canada, 50,000 people a week watch the Perpetual Help Devotions on television? Fr. Jim Mason, C.Ss.R. began the televised Perpetual Help Devotions 15 years ago.
The Edmonton-Toronto province has a staff of 5 volunteers (some members of the Redemptorist Associates Program) one Redemptorist Brother and a priest, Father Doug Stamp, who along with his canonical work, keeps the program moving forward.
The program consists of an introduction, petition prayers, Marian homily, Novena prayers, priest homily and music and closing prayer. Last year we began touring the country to visit Redemptorist parishes and record the Wednesday novena prayers and use them for our weekly broadcast. Last year we went west to Saskatoon, SK. This fall we head East to St. John's Newfoundland.
Our program reaches many who are housebound and there are also many who stay home simply to participate in the program. Those who hunger for the word of God receive a warm positive message. Recently to reach more people we have begun to advertize our program on the local subway system in Toronto and now on the internet as well. In the days ahead be on the lookout for RedemptoristTV on Youtube!
Our mailing list numbers about 8,000. These gracious people contribute about $300,000.00 each year and that pays all the bills (including $130,000 to produce our programs and $90,000.00 to air the programs on TV).

The Year for Priests
Dear Priests,
The Year for Priests, announced by our beloved Pope Benedict XVI to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the death of the saintly Curé of Ars, St. John Mary Vianney, is drawing near. It will be inaugurated by the Holy Father on the 19th of June, the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. The announcement of the Year for Priests has been very warmly received, especially amongst priests themselves. Everyone wants to commit themselves with determination, sincerity and fervour so that it may be a year amply celebrated in the whole world – in the Dioceses, parishes and in every local community – with the warm participation of our Catholic people who undoubtedly love their priests and want to see them happy, holy and joyous in their daily apostolic labours.

Meeting of the Brothers of Europe South
Fernando Gonzalez, C.Ss.R.
The meeting of the Brothers of the southern region of Europe took place in the community of the Most Holy Redeemer in Madrid from the 24th until the 27th of March, 2009. The participants received their official welcome in the chapel of the community. Under the protection of our Redemptorist saints, the gathering began in a fraternal atmosphere of prayer. During the meditation several symbols were brought forward to promote reflection: The Word of God, the Constitutions, a crucifix and a candle. In addition, Father Pedro López, provincial superior of Madrid gave a welcome.
The objectives of the meeting were:
To take advantage of the time and space to share feelings and experiences.
To exchange information about the current situation of Brothers in the Congregation and the situation in Southern Europe in particular.
To reflect about the meetings of other Brothers in different parts of the world.
To reflect about the Redemptorist “apostolic life.” To draw up proposals for the future.
 |
Responsibilities for prayer and the Eucharist were divided up by groups for each day, so that the results were inspiring and promoted participation. For instance, Tuesday’s prayer was organized by the confreres from Spain, Wednesday by those who speak French, Thursday and Friday by the Italian and Portuguese-speaking.
The afternoon Eucharist was presided over by the various presenters. On the 24th Father Enrique López presided and the Spanish Brothers organized it. The Consultor General encouraged us to take responsibility for our own lives. Using the text of the sick man at Bethseda, he had us look at two aspects: the first, to take up life with hope, and the other, to view life with concern. Many there are who have nothing but are able to view life with joy; others have everything and cannot find any meaning for their existence. The Eucharist on the 25th was presided over by Father Félix Catalá and organized by the French Brothers. The Eucharist on the 26th was presided over by Father Samuel Torres (of Colombia) and organized by the Italians and Portuguese. On the 27th the Eucharist was presided over by Father Pedro López, the Provincial Superior, who encouraged us to go forth in our missionary vocation and expressed his satisfaction with the meeting.
|
Each day had an assigned theme: on Tuesday, it was to share experiences; on Wednesday, it was about the first Brothers of the Congregation and the apostolic life of Redemptorists; on Thursday, it dealt with the situation of the Brothers throughout the world, the work of the General Secretariat and the experiences of other regional meetings of Brothers; on Friday there were proposals for the future and conclusions.
 |
With one group composed of the French-speaking and the other group a combination of Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, with the intention of sharing experiences, the groups reflected on the following questions:
What is the situation of the Brothers in your unit? How do they live? What do they do?
What are the most positive aspects of your experience as a Brother in the Congregation?
What are the major difficulties?
What might we do, what do you suggest, to improve the situation of the Brothers in your unit and in the Region?
On Thursday the 26th, after the afternoon session, we spent a little time touring around Madrid. We visited the Provincial house and at the invitation of Father Provincial we had our supper there, a detail which pleased the confreres very much. On the 27th after dinner, Father Provincial invited us on an excursion to Toledo, a city which enchanted all of us participants. As someone said, it is a unique city.
|
The Brothers also had the opportunity for dialog in small groups and in plenary session, about preparing a message to the confreres of the Region. The message would include a very brief summary and it would describe some of the conclusions of the meeting. It would be synthesized under these titles: our convictions, our needs, our desires and hopes. The proposal is that the Brothers of the Region will meet again from April 20 to 25, 2010, in Gaia, Portugal.
All of us are very grateful for the reception and treatment which were given to us during these days of the meeting. The only thing remaining to be done is that the General Secretariat publish an official communication about the meeting.

Message of the Redemptorist Brothers of Southern Europe
27 March 2009
Dear Confreres,
We Redemptorist Brothers of Southern Europe have met in the Community of the Most Holy Redeemer, Madrid, Spain, from the 24th through the 27th of March. Twenty Brothers participated representing the diverse units of our Region: the Provinces of Madrid, Lisbon, Lyon-Paris, Strasbourg, Naples and Casa San Alfonso in Rome. As members of the coordinating team, two confreres from the General Secretariat for Brothers (Brother Viveiros, Province of São Paulo, and Father Samuel Torres, Province of Bogotá) also participated; participants also were the Director for the Center for Redemptorist Spirituality (Father Félix Catalá) and a Consultor General (Father Enrique López).
The meeting took place in an atmosphere which was at once pleasant, fraternal, joyful, with many expectations and with good will toward the future. The majority of the Brothers present were more than 60 years old and showed us a great spirit of service, simplicity, dedication and a great love for the Congregation. We are all

brothers, who with our missionary work, have contributed and continue to contribute to the mission of the Congregation.
We are grateful for the welcome, the hospitality and the extraordinary generosity of the confreres of the Madrid Province. We are especially grateful for the determined and dedicated support of Father Pedro López, Provincial Superior, of the local superior and all the members of the community of the Most Holy Redeemer.
During the meeting we shared personal and communal experiences, reflections about the first Brothers of the Congregation, and about our Redemptorist apostolic life. We also had opportunity to speak about the situation of Redemptorist Brothers in the world, to dialog about the work of the General Secretariat for Brothers and to share the life experiences of Redemptorist Brothers from other parts of the world, especially Latin America.
After a time of prayer, reflection and fraternal sharing, without any spirit of creating polemics or divisions of any vindictive sort, it has seemed a good idea to us to share with you some of our convictions, needs and hopes. We Redemptorists are missionaries. All of us contribute to the mission of the Congregation and we live in community as religious.
Our Convictions:
- We Brothers feel the call to announce the Kingdom of God in every one of the activities of our daily life.
- As religious we feel dedicated to the mission of the Congregation, giving testimony of our faith in the Risen Christ through a life of prayer, work, the apostolate, and all our activities.
- We feel called to live the spirit of the Gospel: being responsible in the service entrusted to us, giving a joyful testimony together with the people, encouraging community life.
- We feel called to live a holy life in the midst of our daily labors; in some cases, as for instance for our oldest members, in limitation and illness.
- We feel called to accomplish what has been entrusted us to do. We make an effort to be close to God’s People, living a life of service and availability in the community.
Our Needs:
- We need to feel freer and that there is confidence in us regarding the work and responsibilities that are given us both within and outside of the community.
- We need to be better prepared. To that end, we seek, in the measure that it is possible and as needed, that there be established a permanent program of formation and that the specialized formation of Brothers be given special emphasis.
- There is a need for our free time to be better organized in order to be able to rest and to take vacations, taking into account, in each case, the limitations of one’s age.
- We need to meet more frequently, as Brothers, to share experiences and to mutually help one another.
- We need to grow in self-confidence.
- There is a need that time and work hours be better coordinated so that, as religious, we might participate fully in the prayer and activities of the community.
- We need to feel better respected as persons, religious and confreres.
- We hear a lot of words, we feel there are a lot of theories and new ideas floating around, but there is a need for these proposals to be put into practice in our units.
- We need a commission in each Province to encourage the life of the Brothers.
- We need to stay better informed about the life of the Congregation and of our own units. But we wish also to be more involved in the different projects and activities that are taking place in local communities.
- We need to receive a better formation. We hope that a more diversified formation will be proposed for future Brothers. Thus, they will be better prepared to take up different tasks and responsibilities in pastoral and missionary plans, in social work, in professional work, in the world of politics and economics.
- We need to prepare ourselves, by way of meetings, to learn how to accept our limitations and to learn how to grow old.
Our Desires and Hopes:
- We hope that there will be greater effort made toward promoting the vocation of the Redemptorist Brother and we are ready to take part in that work.
- We hope that a plan of formation be put together for future Brothers, according to the Ratio Formationis and the guidelines of the Congregation.
- We hope that there would be more talk about the vocation of the Redemptorist Brother and that this vocation be given more visibility in the various apostolic works of the Province.
- We hope we might gather together as Brothers of Southern Europe at least twice during each sexennium.
- We suggest that Brothers older than 70 years ofr age be freed from obligations and responsibilities in the community, respecting their conditions of age and health.
- We hope that the different works and services within the community become the subject of dialog, planning, distribution and actual carrying out in each community.
- We hope that infirm Brothers might be given better attention.
- We dream that in our provinces there may be more work with youth, and thus we might be able to see an increase in young Brothers.
- We hope there might be a change of mentality about and a new vision of male religious life, especially with regard to the mission and vocation of the Brother in the Church and in the Congregation.
- We hope there might be better integration, collaboration and exchange among all the Units of Southern Europe.
- We hope to live in greater solidarity with the poorest and to be more available where there is real need.
To continue our reflection, we propose that the Redemptorist Brothers of Southern Europe meet again in Gaia, Portugal, from April 20 through 25, 2010. We hope to be able to count on the support of our superiors.
We share with everyone the joy of our vocation. We count on the intercession of St.Alphonsus, St.Gerard, our Mother of Perpetual Help, and the rest of the Redemptorist saints and blesseds. Fraternal greetings to all.
Your Brothers in Christ the Redeemer,
The Redemptorist Brothers of Southern Europe
