Editor's Rome Notebook

It is said that “all roads lead to Rome.” This month we have a number of short news items that originate from Rome. We begin by showing you the beautiful greenery and spring flowering taking place at the entrance to the General Government thanks to the hard work of Brother Placido (pictured), Brother Antonio, Brother Giorgio, Father Prandel and Father McKeever. The brother of our Rector, Luciano Panella, is in the process of grafting branches on some of our orange trees for the purpose of restoring “good fruit” to them.

Father Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

As previously reported, our former Superior General, Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. has been appointed as one of four religious Apostolic Visitators to Ireland as part of the overall nine Visitators the Vatican is sending to assist the Irish Church deal with the clerical abuse scandal. Father Tobin and Jesuit Father Gero McLoughlin, promoter of Ignatian spirituality for the Jesuit’s British Province, will visit men’s religious orders. Sister Sharon Holland, I.H.M., a former Vatican official, and Irish Sister Mairin McDonagh, R.J.M. will conduct the visitation of the women’s communities.

The four religious will report to the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesperson, said no deadline has been set for the visitors to complete their work, because many details still need to be worked out and because of the busy schedules of the visitors themselves.

Bishop-elect Ralph Heskitt, C.Ss.R.

Father Ralph Heskitt will be ordained bishop and installed as the 13th bishop of Gibraltar on July 10th. Bishop-elect Ralph was in Rome recently to meet with Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Prefect of the Congregation of Bishops, and SCALA was able to learn about him and his appointment.

O.Ss.R. and M.Ss.R. visits

Three Redemptoristine sisters from the Monastery in Slovakia, pictured at left, recently visited us at the General House. Pictured with Polish confreres Emilio Szopinski and Edward Nocun are Novice Sisters Zuzana and Maria along with their formator, Sr. Ludmila, O.Ss.R.

In other Redemptoristine news, the Liguori, USA Monastery celebrated their Golden Jubilee with a Mass celebrated on April 28, 2010. St. Louis Archbishop Robert J. Carlson was the Main Celebrant and more than 27 Redemptorist crowded into the small sanctuary and overflowed into the monastery pews to concelebrate the Mass. Fr. Tom Picton, Provincial of the Denver Province, was the homilist. At the conclusion of the festivities the Sisters wondered: “Where do we go from here?” It did not take long to receive an answer. It has been recently announced that the Liguori Monastery will pioneer a Redemptoristine Monastery in Thailand sometime after Easter 2011. But that won’t diminish the Liguori community! It has also been announced that the Redemptoristine Monastery in Merrivale, South Africa will be ending and the sisters there will become a part of the Liguori Monastery.

800 Women Superiors General from around the world gathered in Rome from May 7 – 11 for the Plenary Assembly of the International Union of Superiors General (UISG). Sr. Anneliese Herzig, M.Ss.R., Superior of the Mission Sisters of the Most Holy Redeemer of Gars, Germany was in attendance and joined us one day for lunch.

Annual June Processions

Mother of Perpetual Help:

Visitors to the General House in Rome during the month of June may recall participating in our annual celebration of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, which includes an outdoor procession around the Esquiline Hill.

The first stop on that procession has always been in front of an image of Our Mother of Perpetual Help that is enshrined in the facade of a building on Via Merulana between our church and that of St. Mary Major. It is the sight of a miracle where a mother held her sick infant up to implore the help of Our Lady during one of these processions and the child was subsequently healed. The image on the façade of this building is in memory of that healing.

The image has weathered the Roman weather and pollution well, but the building did not. In recent years it had become rather tattered looking. But this spring the owners undertook the task of giving the building a facelift, giving it a new coat of paint.

The photos below show a procession in past, pre-reconditioned years pausing at the image for veneration, the repairs to the building while they were underway and the final result. This year’s procession will pause at the image in a much brighter condition!

Corpus Christi:

The solemnity of Corpus Christi, in most of the world, has been moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. But at the Vatican it remains the traditional Thursday after. June 3rd was supposed to mark the annual Corpus Christi procession up Via Merulana past our Generalate. But rain forced the ceremonies to remain indoors. Pope Benedict celebrated Mass in the Basilica of St. John Lateran and presided over Eucharistic adoration and Benediction. Usually thousands of laity, religious and clergy, vested in their distinctive garbs, march in the procession, which was cancelled. Here are three photos of last year’s procession passing our house.

Alphonsian Academy

Bishop Luigi Padovese, a former professor at the Alphonsian Academy and apostolic vicar in Anatolia, Turkey was stabbed to death June 3rd in Iskenderun, Turkey, hours before he was to travel to Cyprus to meet with Benedict XVI. He was 63. Authorities arrested the Capuchin bishop's driver, who is said to be mentally unstable and reportedly confessed to the crime. The Alphonsian Academy mourns his tragic death.

Congratulations Graduates!

The month of June brings to an end the various academic years of the various Roman universities. The following Redemptorists residing in the Collegio Maggiore of the General House have completed their studies and are returning to their units. Congratulations!

Yearly Spirituality Course & Pilgrimage to Redemptorist sites of Origin

Since 1998, the Spirituality Center, under the direction of Fathers Félix Catalá and Ivel Mendanha, has been offering the annual 3 week Spirituality Course in the English language and the Spanish language to Redemptorists that includes pilgrimages to the significant Redemptorist sites of origin. This year is no different.

23 confreres from around the world are currently participating in this year’s English language course. They are from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Burkina-Niger, Philippines, Korea, Singapore, India and Canada – and not pictured here the Thai confreres who arrived late due to complications acquiring visas brought on by the red-shirt protests.

The base of operations for this year’s course is our Shrine at Materdomini, Italy - an easy journey by bus to the surrounding Alphonsian sites. Materdomini also offers the hospitality of our Neapolitan confreres and excellent accommodations and dining. The course ends with a retreat in the Mother house of the Congregation, Ciorani.

Over the years, an estimated 400 Redemptorists have participated in the summer courses. Fathers Catalá and Mendanha have also given innumerable workshops to innumerable confreres around the world.

Remember, if you’re unable to do the course in person, you can always get a “flavor” of our Alphonsian sites by visiting our www.cssr.com website and click on the menu item: Virtual Pilgrimage.

The Year of Priests

The Year of Priests came to a conclusion with an outdoor Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter’s Square on June 11th. Redemptorists stationed in Rome and a few visiting Redemptorists from around the world participated.

That’s the news from Rome. Continue reading for more news about the Congregation around the world.

FROM THE PROVINCES:

Brazil
A new Interprovincial Community in Brazil
Antônio Niemiec, C.Ss.R.
On March 7, 2010, a celebration was held that brought together various confreres of the Vice-Province of Bahia and a great number of the faithful. The reason was to inaugurate a new interprovincial Redemptorist community and acceptance of a new parish, located on the periphery of the city of Itabuna, in the state of Bahia.

We have accepted, for three years, the parish of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. The new community is initially composed of three confreres, two being from the Vice-Province of Bahia and one from the Province of Porto Alegre. The new foundation will serve as a support for the realization of an interprovincial Redemptorist mission to be preached in the 14 parishes of Itabuna and for the daily pastoral work of the parish in which the community is located.

In June of 2009, Bishop Ceslau Stanula, C.Ss.R., bishop of Itabuna, wrote in a letter addressed to the government of the Redemptorists of Bahia:

The Diocese of Itabuna is missionary and has need of the help of missionaries. The city of Itabuna has many barrios which still do not have proper assistance due to the lack of priests. I come to ask the presence of the Redemptorist Congregation in the

Diocese of Itabuna. I ask for help in the barrio of Maria Pinheiro, which is is very poor and very populated. From the point of evangelization, it is quite abandoned.

A proposal was made at the meeting of the URB, (Union of Redemptorists of Brazil) during the XXIV General Chapter in Rome. It entailed the installation of an interprovincial Redemptorist community in Itabuna, in light of the already existing exhange of personnel between the Units of Brazil.

Among the reasons in favor of the creation of a new community and acceptance of the area of missionary pastoral work in Itabuna, we highlight the following:

·In light of the reality described above, from the point of the need for missionary help in the diocese, the material and spiritual need of the people, and the lack of priests and missionaries, the government of the Vice-Province decided to start a new Redemptorist community in Itabuna.

· The presence of the Redemptorist community will facilitate the work of preparation, preaching, and continuation of an interprovincial Redemptorist mission, to be preached and celebrated in 14 parishes of the city. Redemptorists from all the Units of Brazil will participate in the preaching of this mission.

· As Redemptorists we are sent to the poor and most abandoned. Many of these people live in the peripheries of the large cities. The Brazilian Church and General Government of the Redemptorists remind us that the peripheries of the great urban centers are a true pastoral urgency. The area of the newly created parish matches exactly these conditions.

There are many pilgrims from Itabuna, as well as the surrounding areas, who make an annual pilgrimage to the Redemptorist shrine of Bom Jesus da Lapa. Having a Redemptorist community in Itabuna is a sign of being close to the people of the south of Bahia, whom we consider to be among the most abandoned and our presence among them will facilitate their pilgrimage to the shrine.

Portugal
Second Meeting of the Brothers of Southern Europe
Fernando González, C.Ss.
R.

The second meeting of the Brothers of Southern Europe was held at Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, from April 21 to 24, 2010. The meeting was led by Father Enrique López, Vicar General; by Brother Jeffrey Rolle, Consultor General, and by Father Félix Catalá, from the Spirituality Center.

13 Brothers attended, coming from different provinces, as follows: 2 Brothers from the Province of Naples; 2 Brothers from the Province of Rome, accompanied by Fr.Sergio Santi; 6 Brothers from the Province of Madrid; 3 Brothers from the Province of Lisbon; 1 student, invited from the Province of Lisbon, and also Father António Gomes Dias, Provincial of Lisbon, who accompanied us throughout the meetings. Others were going to participate – 3 Brothers from the Province of Lyons-Paris, 4 Brothers from the Province of Strasbourg, 1 Brother from the Southern Belgium Region and 1 Brother from the Province of London – but none of them was able to attend because their flights were cancelled due to the eruption of the volcano in Iceland.

The first day began with Morning Prayer in chapel at 9:15 AM, with Father Félix organizing it and Father Sergio presiding. At 10:00 AM, under the direction of Fathers López and Félix Catalá, the participants introduced themselves, work was divided up and the objectives of the meeting were clarified: to share experiences, formation, to help us as Redemptorists, and proposals for the future. The themes which Enrique López, Félix Catalá and Jeffrey Rolle were to present were explained: the context of the Congregation, Spirituality, self-esteem. After a break, at 11:30 AM, Father Enrique began telling us about the General Chapter, restructuring for new times, and to clarify the seven principles and criteria established by the XXIV General Chapter (mission, new availability, re-evangelization of the poor, solidarity in human resources, association among the units, reflection on pastoral experience, participation and co-responsibility). He also talked about the Conferences, the work of the Redemptorists and how all this is going to affect the Brothers. At 4:00 PM he proposed three questions for work groups:

1. In 2009 the Brothers of Southern Europe had written up a message: what has happened since the last meeting? Was what was proposed in the previous message put into practice?

2. Relating to brothers, what significance has the phrase, “Restructuring for the Mission”?

3. What meaning does the theme of the Sexennium have for Redemptorists?

We made up two groups, one for the Spanish-speaking, the other for those who speak Portuguese or Italian. At 5:30 PM, we had a general meeting concerning what was said in the groups. Some of the conclusions were that there should be a push specifically for the vocation of the Brother. The Congregation has to change its mentality to do this if it really wants to integrate the Brother more as a missionary in the Congregation. The day ended with the celebration of the Eucharist, prepared by the Brothers from Portugal and presided over by the Provincial of Lisbon.

April 22 started at 8:30 AM with the celebration of the Eucharist, the Brothers of Spain taking charge and presided over by Enrique López. At 10:00 AM Fr.Félix Catalá began talking on the theme of Redemptorist Spirituality. At 11:30 AM Félix Catalá continued on the theme of Redemptorist Spirituality. In the afternoon there were two conferences given by Fr.Félix Catalá about the identity of the Redemptorist Brother, making reference to the first Brothers of the Congregation – Vito Curzio, Gerard Majella and Antonio Lauro. At the end, a questionnaire was given out about the Brothers, to be sent later on to Father Enrique López. In addition, it was proposed that a message for the rest of the members of the Congregation be published in the on-line newsletter SCALA. At 7:30 PM we had a prayer in chapel organized by the Brothers from Spain.

April 23 began with Eucharist at 8:00 AM, organized by the Italian Brothers and presided over by Father Sergio Santi. At 9:00 AM we had a meeting with Brother Jeffrey Rolle, who spoke to us about self-esteem, referring to his personal life experience, and the presence of the Brother in the community and the importance of that. After a brief break we returned to meet to reflect upon some questions which he gave us.

Also, we talked about the message which we wanted to communicate. (Editor’s note: We will have this message in the next edition of the news bulletin Scala.) Another meeting was talked about, but it was decided to wait until the meeting of the Conference of Europe. It was proposed that three Brothers be charged with the responsibility for the next convocations: one from Portugal, another from Spain, and another from among the Brothers of Europe who were not able to come.

At 11:30 AM, we went to the community of Guimaraes, where we were offered a delicious meal and afterwards we visited the city. After that, we visited the city of Braga, the Shrine of Samerio and the Shrine of Bom Jesus. At 9:30 PM we arrived at Vila Nova de Gaia, where we ended our meeting with a “Gaudeamus”.

Thailand
New Mission
Don MacKinnon, C.Ss.R. (denverlink)

For the past several years, many Thai Redemptorists have traveled to Laos. The objective for crossing the Mekhong River into the Communist country is to offer short courses to seminarians in Takek. Some of the young men in Laos, including members of the Kmhmú hill tribes, have asked to join the Congregation. Recently, Redemptorists were deeded a large property in the vicinity of the seminary.

Thai Redemptorist Fr. Phaiboon Udomdej gathered a group of seminarians from the nearby village to mark off the land in the dense jungle so that “squatters” cannot claim the property. Currently, both diocesan and Redemptorist seminarians participate in devotions in the Takek seminary chapel. Theirs is the only seminary in the entire country of 4 million people - almost 1 million of whom are Kmhmú.

REDEMPTORISTS IN THE NEWS:

Thailand
Bishop Banchong Chaiyara, C.Ss.R. calls for healing
Vorapoj Singha, UCA News

As calm returns to Bangkok and other cities in Thailand after the clashes between government forces and the protesting “Red Shirts,” a bishop and several priests in the red shirt protesters’ strongholds have called for all sides to heal the country.

“There is no winner. Everyone has lost,” said Bishop Banchong Chaiyara of Ubon Ratchathani, president of the Episcopal Commission for Social Ministries.
“The healing process must begin immediately even though it is hard to imagine so amidst the anger and pain,” said the bishop of the northeastern diocese.
He then urged Catholics to pray for peace and all sides to work toward solving problems and heal the country.

Arsonists and rioters left many areas of Bangkok in ruins on May 19, after red shirt leaders announced an end to their occupation of a central commercial district.
Government buildings in several cities in northern and northeastern Thailand, which are red shirt strongholds, were also torched.

According to Thai media reports on May 21, 52 people have been killed in political violence since May 14, and more than 400 injured. The bloody crackdown inflamed unrest outside the capital as supporters in northeastern Thailand set fire to regional government offices.

“We should not hate each other because we have different political ideologies,” said Father Vithaya Ngamwong, vicar general of Ubon Ratchathani diocese and pastor of its Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, which is 800 meters from the town hall razed by red shirts on a rampage on May 19.
“Black smoke around here, and chaos everywhere,” the priest recalled and added that “national reconciliation must start now.”

Violence also broke out in the northern Chiang Mai city, where people tried to burn buildings and throw homemade bombs after the Bangkok protests ended.

“We are praying for unity in the country everyday and hope that things return to normal,” Father Vuthilert Haelom, vicar general of Chiang Mai diocese, said.

The priest said that every church in his diocese is safe and not affected by the violence. However, “we pray for the people who were wounded and killed in the political conflict.”
