The Birds and the Bees, Redemptorist style

Please be sure to read the announcement section of SCALA below for important and time-sensitive information about the Redemptorist Day that will be held during World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, Spain on Saturday, August 20. All leaders of Redemptorist groups should take special notice of the forms that need to be returned by e-mail to the organizing committee by July 15th.

The General House is a crossroads of Redemptorist life. Redemptorists from around the world pass through for a variety of reasons. Recently the General House has been a beehive of activity. We've had many visitors from all corners of the Redemptorist world come for events and meetings. The meetings have been about the formation of candidates to Redemptorist life and priesthood by the Secretariat of Formation; the sustainability and fragility of financing missionary work among the poor by our Finance Secretariat; and helping our Redemptoristine sisters organize a General Assembly for their Order in 2012 by the Secretariat for the Redemptoristine sisters.

The Center for Spirituality is conducting its annual English and Spanish language workshops for Redemptorists this summer. About thirty confreres converged on Rome at the start of June for the English language workshop. They have now made their way to Materdomini to enjoy their hospitality and facilities for the course and to be the hub for excursions to the places of origin. The group includes some Redemptorists preparing for their final vows. What a great way to begin perpetual profession – steeped in Alphonsian spirituality and experiencing places like Scala, Ciorani, Pagani, Marianella and Muro Lucano. Can't come to Italy? You too can experience our roots – virtually - by visiting our cssr.com website and click on "On-line Pilgrimage" in the menu.

Materdomini

One of our treasured pieces of patrimony, Casa Anastasio in Scala, is undergoing some change. The Province of Naples restored our founder St. Alphonsus' first community facility many years ago and has kept it in good condition at their own expense with the hopes that it would be a center for group and individual retreats. Despite it being a place of pilgrimage for many Redemptorists, the facility has not been used much for overnight stays and has not generated income to cover its maintenance. In that light, the Province received permission from the General Government to rent out portions of the facility to local vendors for shops to raise revenue for its continued upkeep. The essential Redemptorist patrimony of Brother Vitus' oven with the original etching of the Redemptorist coat of arms and the community chapel will be off-limits and preserved without change.

The Redemptorist priest-students studying here who make up the Collegio Maggiore and the professors of the Alphonsianum are beginning to see the light at the end of the academic tunnel. Many are finishing exams and anticipating a well-deserved summer break from studies and the constant demands of teaching, giving seminars, doing research and directing theses.

At the conclusion of this academcs semester the following confreres will have completed their studies in Rome and will be returning to their provinces fortified with ecclesiastical degrees and ready to serve their Units with their expertise.

Last month we reported that the Alphonsian Academy saw two alumni appointed bishops by Pope Benedict. Make that three now – Father Raymond Kingsley Wickramasinghe, an alumnus from Sri Lanka, was appointed Ordinary of the diocese of Galle, Sri Lanka in late May.

A successor to the late Major Archbishop Cardinal Varkey Vithayathel, C.Ss.R. has been chosen by the Syro-Malabar Church. 66 year old Bishop George Alencherry of the Syro Malabar eparchy of Thuckalay, India was selected by the Church on May 24th and confirmed by the Holy See on May 25th.

The month of June finds Redemptorists around the world celebrating the feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help; the original, miraculous icon is enthroned in our Church of Sant'Alfonso here in Rome. The General House celebrates her feastday annually with a Mass and the traditional outdoor procession around the Esquiline Hill.

The General Council has just started their quarterly meetings. This session will include, for the first time, the five new coordinators of the five conferences. The fruit of General Government deliberations and decisions are not always immediately revealed nor apparent, but it is the nature of their work to gradually unfold into actionable apostolic activity in various parts of the world, which becomes material for SCALA to report on in future issues.

Places where Redemptorist missionary dynamism continues to unfold is in our units known as "Regions" or "Missions." They are usually staffed by a very small, dedicated band of Redemptorist missionaries working in difficult circumstances trying to establish a permanent foothold. They are usually attached to larger, better-off "mother" Provinces who provide resources to aid them. This issue of SCALA features articles on one region, Copenhagen and one mission, Mozambique.

Some are saying the General House has gone to the birds! Why? No, not because we're on Twitter. At Eastertime the General House was given a gift of two singing canaries. They did more than sing. The two canaries have now become a family of six. They have become quite the center of attention in our community. You can imagine all the quips that have emerged from the confreres during their gestation, hatching, nurturing and leaving the nest. They have yet to be given names...but wouldn't you think names could be drawn from the pantheon of famous Redemptorists and Redemptoristines?

FROM THE PROVINCES:

Province of Vienna; Region of Copenhagen
Regional meeting in Denmark:
New priorities and main focuses for the 21st century
C.Ss.R. Denmark

Father Lorenz Voith, Provincial Superior of the Province of Vienna, travelled to the Region of Copenhagen (Denmark) at the end of May to take part in a regional conference about the future Redemptorist presence and apostolates in this region of Northern Europe. At present, there are 10 Fathers and one Deacon, from various counties, who belong to this Region. Fr, Josef Dudek has been the Regional Superior for over 12 years.

Fr. Voith took special note of the work being done for the immigrant population of Copenhagen and the church's concrete presence among them embodied by the Redemptorists – work that is not always easy. At the same time he underlined the necessity to determine new structures, which were outlined by the 24th General Chapter (2009) and that our being explored by the new European Conference of Redemptorists. These same principles and priorities (towards a European pastoral plan) will also apply to the work in Denmark. Criteria will be established to renew the international community in Copenhagen, which could include Redemptorists from countries outside of Europe. The coordinator of the European Conference (Jacek Zdrzałek, C.Ss.R.) should be integrated into this process. In addition there will be a meeting this November together with the Province Consulters from Vienna.

The members of the Copenhagen Region with Fr. Voith.

According to the statistics, the Redemptorists are the largest religious Congregation in Denmark. We staff three houses: Copenhagen (Saint Anna's Church), Odense (Saint Albani Church) and Naestved (Saint Clement's Church). Numerous other parishes are looked after as well in the pastoral care of English speaking (Philippinos) and Polish-speaking people.

In Saint Anna's Church in Copenhagen more than 1200 persons meet every Sunday for different Masses or other activities. In addition, youth work is taking on a special focus. The Danish language is an important requirement to work with the native children born to immigrants. So all the priests who work in Denmark must master this language well. Some of our priests cooperate in Denmark at the Diocesan level also. Father Dudek is on the bishop's council and Fr. Benny Mathew is a spiritual advisor to CARITAS-Denmark.

Blessing the renovated rooms/House-Chapel inCopenhagen

The Church and Redemptorist residence at St. Anna in Copenhagen

Multicultural composition

Among the Redemptorists working in Denmark at the moment, there are only two Danes by birth. The other Priests come from Poland, India (Liguori, Kerala) and from Belgium. The Redemptorists first came to Denmark 110 years ago from Austria. To this day the Region is under the aegis of the Vienna province. A reinforced and also a structural integration in the European Conference is planned on account of the internationality and the personnel challenges of this region.

Blessing of the renovated rectory of Saint Anna in Copenhagen

On the occasion of the regional conference, Fr. Voith blessed the newly renovated Monastery at Saint Anna. Beside new meeting rooms, a new kitchen and dining room, the Fathers' rooms and guest rooms were outfitted with bathrooms. An elevator was also installed. A good part of the renovation was supported financially by the Bonifatius-Stiftung (St. Boniface Foundation) of Germany.

Africa
Mission of Mozambique
Province of Buenos Aires

In 2002 three missionary priests left from Argentina for Mozambique, moved by the missionary Spirit of Jesus, and immediately took on the pastoral responsibility for the Mission of Muvamba, in the Diocese of Inhambane.

In 2005 another three new missionaries crossed the Atlantic for the coasts of the Indian Ocean which bathe East Africa and began working in a populous parish of Xipamanine situated in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.

We wanted to serve the Church of Mozambique which lives and works, suffers and loves in a context of extreme poverty and of great challenges. Our missionary service is directed fundamentally toward consolidating the life of the Christian community through pastoral encouragement, visits to families, and the formation of leaders and of pastoral agents. At the same time, we accompany the process of development for the communities, fostering and managing various projects aimed at bettering the quality of life for everyone.

Currently, there are only six Redemptorist priests in Mozambique. In 2008, 3 lay volunteers arrived. Many others want to go to serve in this country and many young men in our seminaries also are preparing themselves for it. The resources that we have available for the Church in Mozambique are limited, but Providence is manifesting itself through the generosity of many brothers and friends who continuously help us. For this reason we invite you to share in solidarity with the communities of Mozambique. We want you also to be part of it all.

Around 750 million people live in Africa, a continent which has been called to overcome great social crises over the last several years. The great challenge of the Third Millennium is, for the majority of African nations, to be able to satisfy the vital needs of and to reach an acceptable level in educational and health development for the majority of the population.

The African bishops compare the situation of the continent to that of the man who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of assailants (cf.Lk.10, 25-37) … A Samaritan had compassion and truly made himself neighbor to the poor stranger who lay half-dead. Jesus concluded the story saying to the doctor of the law: "Go and do likewise".

Editor's note: The Province of Dublin and the Vice Province of Fortaleza are preparing to send two confreres to Mozambique also. They would work near the border of Malawi, and independently of the confreres from Argentina.

Brazil: Province of Rio de Janeiro
Saint Alphonsus Church and the 100th anniversary of Plaza Saens Pena

Editor's note: Many of our Churches around the world face public plazas or common space. Our Church of St. Alphonsus in Rio de Janeiro gives an account of the specialness these spaces can give in welcoming and inviting others into our midst.

Our dear Plaza Saens Pena, which runs in front of our Church of St. Alphonsus, reached 100 years on April 30. The parish of Saint Alphonsus participated in the festivities with the celebration of the Eucharist in the Plaza, on Friday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m. and a photo exposition in the vestibule of the church; Another Mass was held on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. to end the festivities. After the celebration, all gathered in front of the church and sang "Happy Birthday", and shared a centenary cake.

The Eucharist celebrated in the Plaza Saens Pena

During the celebration, our pastor, Padre Luis Carlos, focused on the desire for peace and blessings for all who daily pass through the plaza, those coming from the metro or by other means, and those who live nearby. In a special manner he asked for mercy for the numerous hearts that do not believe in God, and abuse the space of the plaza. Rain began to fall, which gave us more energy to sing: Live Lord Jesus!

After the homily, at the prayer of the faithful, 99 candles were lit, and prayers were offered asking for peace for all people, harmony in the city, for health and emergency response teams, for new life for the oppressed, for security for our city, strength for the weak, and for the end to corruption, violence and drug trafficking, and for an end to trafficking of human organs and persons. The hundredth candle was lit in honor of the anniversary of the Plaza Saens Pena. With the candles lit we sang our birthday song!

At the closing of the Mass, the Plaza was consecrated to Our Lady, and rosaries were handed out, donated by the Marian groups.

The exposition in the church vestibule

Beginning in the afternoon of Friday, May 20, a grand exposition of old photos, until then on display in the plaza, was brought into the church vestibule. They included photos of the inauguration of the Plaza, the map of Tijuco at the start of the last decade, the cinemas, the construction and inauguration of the metro, a true panorama of the last century.

The closing Mass

The closing Centenary Mass began with the singing of "It is the time to praise God," a fitting way to end the festivities of the centenary of the Plaza Saens Pena. In attendance were local authorities such as councilman Luiz Humberto , representing City Hall, the Regional Administrator of Tijuco, Nelson Aguiar, and representatives of the Union of Public Order and Municipal Guard.

Along with the procession of the Word of God, white and yellow palm branches adorned the altar.

The proclamation of the Gospel of Saint John was done with the participation of the altar servers. Padre Luis Carlos did the voice of Jesus, and we heard Our Lord saying: "My Father's house has many dwelling places." Our Father has indeed prepared many dwelling places, the first being the womb of our mother, and the second the world in which we live.

Our pastor thanked the many people who have cared for the Plaza during the last 100 years – a place of looking up to the skies, of seeing the stars and moon. He reminded us of our responsibility to care for the Plaza as well. Today, with so much movement, we need to stop and reflect. All need to cooperate so that "our Plaza" becomes a dwelling place of God. He thanked all who care for the public places, both in the Plaza and in the church.

The blessing was given for the entire assembly in the Plaza, asking that all who pass through it will desire peace, as Jesus teaches in the Gospel.

We honored Our Lady with a procession of parishioners with small vases of flowers taken to the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, followed by the statue's crowning.

Prior to the Closing procession, the pastor presented councilman Luiz Humberto with a framed icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and in return the councilman presented a historical certificate of participation in the centenary festivities of the Plaza Saens Pena.

In front of the church entryway a beautiful cake waited for all.

Vietnam
Seeking Good Shepherds
Asia News

Ho Chi Minh City - In a period of intense "internal and external" pressure and difficulties within the Church in Vietnam, the faithful seek the guidance of "good shepherds" who know how to build confidence among people, promote the values of "charity and justice" and protect the right to religious freedom.  This is the conclusion of a survey carried out among seventy parishioners of former Saigon. Vietnamese Catholics denounce a certain lack of communion between faithful and some "confusion" or "approximations" in carrying out pastoral and social relations.

A survey conducted last May 21 in some parishes in Ho Chi Minh City showed that Catholics have "fumbling" relations amongst each other and are in need of the guidance of "good shepherds". Respect and trust are lacking, say the respondents, and each individual maintains a "mechanism of self-protection" because there is "mutual distrust". The difficulties and pressures "from outside", the rigid rules imposed on religion by the Communist government contribute to exacerbate the difficulties.

Speaking to Asia News Fr Vincent Pham Trung Than, provincial superior of the Redemptorists in Vietnam, stressed the importance "of communion among the faithful." The priest invites the shepherds to "spread the social teachings of the Catholic Church" such as the Compendium of Social Doctrine. He adds that awareness of human dignity, salvation in God, the values of justice and charity for all, also need to be strengthened.

Fr. Vincent also recalls the age-old question of land ownership and property of the Catholic Church. These problems, he said, cause corruption, social injustice and oppression. He urges the authorities to review the laws on land to meet the expectations of the people, while the government must return the property belonging to the Church or clarify the terms of rent and use. The Redemptorist priest also denounces the perpetration of a series of injustices on some people, especially Christians, who are subjected to "physical and mental" violence. For this we need to pray and follow God's Word, to bring aid and comfort to those who suffer and are persecuted. The work of the Redemptorists, he adds, is aimed in particular at the poor, the disabled and migrants.

He then recalls the work of the Church before 1975, when North Vietnam defeated the South Vietnamese government, allies of the Americans and proceeded to the reunification of the country, under the umbrella of a communist regime. In the past, religions contributed in education, public healthcare, in social work. After 1975 the government has prevented church activities in these areas, causing suffering and injustice for much of the population.

"As a Vietnamese Church - said Father Vincent - we must look at positive examples, represented by Pope John Paul II and Cardinal FrançoisXavier Nguyen Van Thuan. Pope John Paul II said of him: "A life spent in consistent and heroic adhesion to his vocation."

SECRETARIATS:

Rome
General Secretariat of Formation for the new Sexennium
Luis Alberto Roballo, C.Ss.R.
Executive Secretary for Formation

The General Secretariat for Formation for the Redemptorists gathered during Easter Week in our house of Sant'Alfonso in Rome. The Secretariat's membership indicates the dynamism that is to be found in the Congregation: continuity and change united in an effort at reflection and service for the Redemptorist missionary charism.

The General Secretariat for Formation is presided over by the Consultors General Father Alberto Eseverri of the Province of Madrid and Brother Jeffrey Rolle of the Province of Baltimore. Its members are Fathers John Fahey of the Province of Denver; Charles Duval of the Province of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré; Jacek Zdrzalek of the Province of Warsaw ( first Coordinator of the Conference of Europe); Sahaya Arockiasamy of the Province of Bangalore, India; Guy-Arnaud Agbossaga of the Viceprovince of Burkina-Niger ( first Coordinator of the Conference of Africa and Madagascar); Marlos da Silva of the Province of São Paulo; and Luis Alberto Roballo of the Province of Bogotá, Executive Secretary.

Three of the members were re-appointed. The Consultors General are new as are four of the other members. Two are Coordinators of a Conference and within the Secretariat the five new Conferences of the Congregation are all represented.

The membership of the Secretariat is a demonstration of Redemptorist diversity: place of origin, lived experiences, culture, languages, formation and the pastoral work that they have been involved in. This diversity, far from being an obstacle to dialog and unity, we believe, will be of great usefulness in aiding the General Government and Redemptorists in the projects and activities of initial and continuing formation.

The Easter meeting included the presence of Father General Michael Brehl, past member and recording secretary for the Secretariat in the last sexennium; Father Jacek Dembrek, Consultor General and past President of the Secretariat; and Father Serafino Fiore, previous Vicar General and current Director of the Center for Spirituality. Our schedule allowed us to join in with the Community of the General House. One evening we celebrated the Eucharist before the icon of Perpetual Help with the Collegio Maggiore and we had a fraternal dinner.

As part of the agenda, we reviewed the activities of the Secretariat for the last months and for this sexennium studied the final documents of the XXIV General Chapter, reviewed the Secretariat's Directory and began a discussion of the projects and assigned tasks to be done over the next years.

The final documents of the last General Chapter offer very valuable orientations for the Secretariat and some of it decisions have to do directly with Formation, Vocation Ministry, the profile of the Redemptorist in the new vision of the Congregation, and its implications for initial and continuing formation. The organization of the five Conferences demands special attention to formation and to the very future of the Congregation.

Among the concrete projects of the Secretariat are the courses for Redemptorist formators. Next July the second session of the course in Portuguese will take place in Juiz de Fora, Province of Rio de Janeiro, for the units of Brazil. We hope to begin in the coming months the course in French for formators from Africa and Vietnam and it will be open also to all from french speaking units. The courses in English and Spanish will be offered once again, in Europe and America as well as in Asia-Oceania. The Manual for Formators will continue to be published. New fields of endeavor are emerging such as updating courses in Moral Theology and Formation for international communities.

We are grateful for the support received from the past General Chapter and from the past and present General Governments. Attentive re-reading of the final documents of the General Chapter of 2009 and the suggestions they made to the whole Congregation mention several times the profile of our communities and of Redemptorists within the new vision of the Congregation. We believe the only way we can achieve this is through Redemptorist formation both on the initial level as well as on-going formation. The General Secretariat for Formation stands ready to accompany the efforts that the Congregation is making in this regard and toward which formators and every one of our young men in formation are dedicated. We express our best wishes and prayers to the first Coordinators of the five Conferences as they begin their mission.

Our website www.fcontinuacssr.com continues to be available on-line and we hope to update it frequently. Your greetings, information, and comments are always welcome and we are at the service of all our confreres and collaborators.
