ANNOUNCEMENTS: FROM THE PROVINCES: SECRETARIATS TRANSITIONS:
The Birds and the Bees, Redemptorist style Please be sure to read the announcement section of SCALA below for important and time-sensitive information about the Redemptorist Day that will be held during World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, Spain on Saturday, August 20. All leaders of Redemptorist groups should take special notice of the forms that need to be returned by e-mail to the organizing committee by July 15th.
At the conclusion of this academcs semester the following confreres will have completed their studies in Rome and will be returning to their provinces fortified with ecclesiastical degrees and ready to serve their Units with their expertise.
A successor to the late Major Archbishop Cardinal Varkey Vithayathel, C.Ss.R. has been chosen by the Syro-Malabar Church. 66 year old Bishop George Alencherry of the Syro Malabar eparchy of Thuckalay, India was selected by the Church on May 24th and confirmed by the Holy See on May 25th.
The General Council has just started their quarterly meetings. This session will include, for the first time, the five new coordinators of the five conferences. The fruit of General Government deliberations and decisions are not always immediately revealed nor apparent, but it is the nature of their work to gradually unfold into actionable apostolic activity in various parts of the world, which becomes material for SCALA to report on in future issues. Places where Redemptorist missionary dynamism continues to unfold is in our units known as "Regions" or "Missions." They are usually staffed by a very small, dedicated band of Redemptorist missionaries working in difficult circumstances trying to establish a permanent foothold. They are usually attached to larger, better-off "mother" Provinces who provide resources to aid them. This issue of SCALA features articles on one region, Copenhagen and one mission, Mozambique.

ACTIVITY
FORM Return this information by July 15 to: alfonsianajmj@gmail.com PROVINCE: ACTIVITY LEADER’S NAME AND SURNAME: ACTIVITY LEADER’S E-MAIL: ACTIVITY LEADER’S TELEPHONE NUMBER: AUDIOVISUAL MATERIAL REQUIRED: BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE PLANNED ACTIVITY: Province of Vienna; Region of Copenhagen Father Lorenz Voith, Provincial Superior of the Province of Vienna, travelled to the Region of Copenhagen (Denmark) at the end of May to take part in a regional conference about the future Redemptorist presence and apostolates in this region of Northern Europe. At present, there are 10 Fathers and one Deacon, from various counties, who belong to this Region. Fr, Josef Dudek has been the Regional Superior for over 12 years. Fr. Voith took special note of the work being done for the immigrant population of Copenhagen and the church's concrete presence among them embodied by the Redemptorists – work that is not always easy. At the same time he underlined the necessity to determine new structures, which were outlined by the 24th General Chapter (2009) and that our being explored by the new European Conference of Redemptorists. These same principles and priorities (towards a European pastoral plan) will also apply to the work in Denmark. Criteria will be established to renew the international community in Copenhagen, which could include Redemptorists from countries outside of Europe. The coordinator of the European Conference (Jacek Zdrzałek, C.Ss.R.) should be integrated into this process. In addition there will be a meeting this November together with the Province Consulters from Vienna.
The members of the Copenhagen Region with Fr. Voith. According to the statistics, the Redemptorists are the largest religious Congregation in Denmark. We staff three houses: Copenhagen (Saint Anna's Church), Odense (Saint Albani Church) and Naestved (Saint Clement's Church). Numerous other parishes are looked after as well in the pastoral care of English speaking (Philippinos) and Polish-speaking people. In Saint Anna's Church in Copenhagen more than 1200 persons meet every Sunday for different Masses or other activities. In addition, youth work is taking on a special focus. The Danish language is an important requirement to work with the native children born to immigrants. So all the priests who work in Denmark must master this language well. Some of our priests cooperate in Denmark at the Diocesan level also. Father Dudek is on the bishop's council and Fr. Benny Mathew is a spiritual advisor to CARITAS-Denmark.
Multicultural composition Among the Redemptorists working in Denmark at the moment, there are only two Danes by birth. The other Priests come from Poland, India (Liguori, Kerala) and from Belgium. The Redemptorists first came to Denmark 110 years ago from Austria. To this day the Region is under the aegis of the Vienna province. A reinforced and also a structural integration in the European Conference is planned on account of the internationality and the personnel challenges of this region. Blessing of the renovated rectory of Saint Anna in Copenhagen On the occasion of the regional conference, Fr. Voith blessed the newly renovated Monastery at Saint Anna. Beside new meeting rooms, a new kitchen and dining room, the Fathers' rooms and guest rooms were outfitted with bathrooms. An elevator was also installed. A good part of the renovation was supported financially by the Bonifatius-Stiftung (St. Boniface Foundation) of Germany. Africa In 2002 three missionary priests left from Argentina for Mozambique, moved by the missionary Spirit of Jesus, and immediately took on the pastoral responsibility for the Mission of Muvamba, in the Diocese of Inhambane. In 2005 another three new missionaries crossed the Atlantic for the coasts of the Indian Ocean which bathe East Africa and began working in a populous parish of Xipamanine situated in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. We wanted to serve the Church of Mozambique which lives and works, suffers and loves in a context of extreme poverty and of great challenges. Our missionary service is directed fundamentally toward consolidating the life of the Christian community through pastoral encouragement, visits to families, and the formation of leaders and of pastoral agents. At the same time, we accompany the process of development for the communities, fostering and managing various projects aimed at bettering the quality of life for everyone.
Editor's note: The Province of Dublin and the Vice Province of Fortaleza are preparing to send two confreres to Mozambique also. They would work near the border of Malawi, and independently of the confreres from Argentina.
Some data about Mozambique
Area: 801.590 km² Brazil: Province of Rio de Janeiro Editor's note: Many of our Churches around the world face public plazas or common space. Our Church of St. Alphonsus in Rio de Janeiro gives an account of the specialness these spaces can give in welcoming and inviting others into our midst.
The closing Mass The closing Centenary Mass began with the singing of "It is the time to praise God," a fitting way to end the festivities of the centenary of the Plaza Saens Pena. In attendance were local authorities such as councilman Luiz Humberto , representing City Hall, the Regional Administrator of Tijuco, Nelson Aguiar, and representatives of the Union of Public Order and Municipal Guard.
The blessing was given for the entire assembly in the Plaza, asking that all who pass through it will desire peace, as Jesus teaches in the Gospel. We honored Our Lady with a procession of parishioners with small vases of flowers taken to the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, followed by the statue's crowning. Prior to the Closing procession, the pastor presented councilman Luiz Humberto with a framed icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and in return the councilman presented a historical certificate of participation in the centenary festivities of the Plaza Saens Pena. In front of the church entryway a beautiful cake waited for all.
Vietnam Ho Chi Minh City - In a period of intense "internal and external" pressure and difficulties within the Church in Vietnam, the faithful seek the guidance of "good shepherds" who know how to build confidence among people, promote the values of "charity and justice" and protect the right to religious freedom. This is the conclusion of a survey carried out among seventy parishioners of former Saigon. Vietnamese Catholics denounce a certain lack of communion between faithful and some "confusion" or "approximations" in carrying out pastoral and social relations. A survey conducted last May 21 in some parishes in Ho Chi Minh City showed that Catholics have "fumbling" relations amongst each other and are in need of the guidance of "good shepherds". Respect and trust are lacking, say the respondents, and each individual maintains a "mechanism of self-protection" because there is "mutual distrust". The difficulties and pressures "from outside", the rigid rules imposed on religion by the Communist government contribute to exacerbate the difficulties.
He then recalls the work of the Church before 1975, when North Vietnam defeated the South Vietnamese government, allies of the Americans and proceeded to the reunification of the country, under the umbrella of a communist regime. In the past, religions contributed in education, public healthcare, in social work. After 1975 the government has prevented church activities in these areas, causing suffering and injustice for much of the population. "As a Vietnamese Church - said Father Vincent - we must look at positive examples, represented by Pope John Paul II and Cardinal FrançoisXavier Nguyen Van Thuan. Pope John Paul II said of him: "A life spent in consistent and heroic adhesion to his vocation." Rome The General Secretariat for Formation for the Redemptorists gathered during Easter Week in our house of Sant'Alfonso in Rome. The Secretariat's membership indicates the dynamism that is to be found in the Congregation: continuity and change united in an effort at reflection and service for the Redemptorist missionary charism. The General Secretariat for Formation is presided over by the Consultors General Father Alberto Eseverri of the Province of Madrid and Brother Jeffrey Rolle of the Province of Baltimore. Its members are Fathers John Fahey of the Province of Denver; Charles Duval of the Province of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré; Jacek Zdrzalek of the Province of Warsaw ( first Coordinator of the Conference of Europe); Sahaya Arockiasamy of the Province of Bangalore, India; Guy-Arnaud Agbossaga of the Viceprovince of Burkina-Niger ( first Coordinator of the Conference of Africa and Madagascar); Marlos da Silva of the Province of São Paulo; and Luis Alberto Roballo of the Province of Bogotá, Executive Secretary. Three of the members were re-appointed. The Consultors General are new as are four of the other members. Two are Coordinators of a Conference and within the Secretariat the five new Conferences of the Congregation are all represented. The membership of the Secretariat is a demonstration of Redemptorist diversity: place of origin, lived experiences, culture, languages, formation and the pastoral work that they have been involved in. This diversity, far from being an obstacle to dialog and unity, we believe, will be of great usefulness in aiding the General Government and Redemptorists in the projects and activities of initial and continuing formation. The Easter meeting included the presence of Father General Michael Brehl, past member and recording secretary for the Secretariat in the last sexennium; Father Jacek Dembrek, Consultor General and past President of the Secretariat; and Father Serafino Fiore, previous Vicar General and current Director of the Center for Spirituality. Our schedule allowed us to join in with the Community of the General House. One evening we celebrated the Eucharist before the icon of Perpetual Help with the Collegio Maggiore and we had a fraternal dinner. ![]() As part of the agenda, we reviewed the activities of the Secretariat for the last months and for this sexennium studied the final documents of the XXIV General Chapter, reviewed the Secretariat's Directory and began a discussion of the projects and assigned tasks to be done over the next years. The final documents of the last General Chapter offer very valuable orientations for the Secretariat and some of it decisions have to do directly with Formation, Vocation Ministry, the profile of the Redemptorist in the new vision of the Congregation, and its implications for initial and continuing formation. The organization of the five Conferences demands special attention to formation and to the very future of the Congregation. Among the concrete projects of the Secretariat are the courses for Redemptorist formators. Next July the second session of the course in Portuguese will take place in Juiz de Fora, Province of Rio de Janeiro, for the units of Brazil. We hope to begin in the coming months the course in French for formators from Africa and Vietnam and it will be open also to all from french speaking units. The courses in English and Spanish will be offered once again, in Europe and America as well as in Asia-Oceania. The Manual for Formators will continue to be published. New fields of endeavor are emerging such as updating courses in Moral Theology and Formation for international communities. We are grateful for the support received from the past General Chapter and from the past and present General Governments. Attentive re-reading of the final documents of the General Chapter of 2009 and the suggestions they made to the whole Congregation mention several times the profile of our communities and of Redemptorists within the new vision of the Congregation. We believe the only way we can achieve this is through Redemptorist formation both on the initial level as well as on-going formation. The General Secretariat for Formation stands ready to accompany the efforts that the Congregation is making in this regard and toward which formators and every one of our young men in formation are dedicated. We express our best wishes and prayers to the first Coordinators of the five Conferences as they begin their mission. Our website www.fcontinuacssr.com continues to be available on-line and we hope to update it frequently. Your greetings, information, and comments are always welcome and we are at the service of all our confreres and collaborators.
