NEWS FROM THE PROVINCES

South America
Surinam
Brendan Callanan, C.Ss.R.

I arrived on January 5, 2007, after a 90 minute Surinam Airways flight from Belem. Father Dionisio Zamauner was waiting for me at the airport which is about 40 kilometers from the city of Paramaribo. My first surprise: automobiles drive on the left side of the road, a consequence of the British influence in this region. The weather was inclement and rainy. From November to February it rains less than usual here. I am living with Dionisio in a neighborhood called Batour, about 5 kilometers from the center where Fathers Mulder and Vergilio live.

You have only to go out for a walk to discover that the population of Surinam is very culturally diverse. There are people whose origin is Indian, African, Japanese, Chinese, Dutch emigrants from Holland, and of course the natives of Surinam. This same diversity is found also in their religious expressions: there are a good number of Muslim mosques and Hindustani temples, plus a synagogue for the few Jewish people who live here, as well as churches for the various Christian religions, Catholic, Lutheran, Evangelical, Baptists etc.

It is estimated that there are about forty thousand Brazilians here. The majority of them work in the diamond mines, the others are merchants. Most of them come from Para or Maranhao, although I have met some people from Solonopole in Ceara and incredible as it may seem, one of them knows people whom I know from the parish of Prado in Iguatu. Mass is celebrated in Portuguese twice a month for the Brazilians.

It is surprising how many people here understand English. There are two Masses in English every month in a church in the center of the city. Those who come are principally migrants from (British) Guiana and some from various consulates from other countries. Dutch is the official language but in everyday living most people speak Sranang. Many people study English in school.

There are three Surinam Redemptorists, all advanced in age. Among these is the Bishop Emeritus, Alois Zichem. He resides in Paramaribo. The others live in Groningen, a city about fifty kilometers from the capital. One of them is of Chinese descent (Valdi), the other is from India (Moesai). The latter visited India when he was still in his fifties but he still remembers the names of some of the Irish confreres (Hickey, Connoly, Morgan). In the highlands of Surinam there are some seven confreres, three from Surinam, one from the province of St. Clement/Region of Nederland, one from Sao Paulo, one from Porto Alegre and one from Fortaleza. We are awaiting the arrival of “juniorist” Rafael from Porto Alegre on Feb. 16. There was a time when there were fifty Redemptorists here from the former province of Amsterdam.

There are also five Oblate of Mary Immaculate priests here, four from Holland and one from Surinam. Also three Salvatorians from Belgium and four Brothers of the Sacred Heart from Holland. There are some religious sisters also, but they are few and aged. In February the Congregation of the Sisters of Paramaribo celebrates their seventy-fifth anniversary of foundation. These Sisters had from some time a house and school in Campina Grande. Now, however, they are leaving there.

The bishop is a native of Holland and belonged to the clergy of the diocese of Paramaribo before he was named bishop. There are five diocesan priests, one of them a twin brother to our confrere, Fr. Valdi. Two seminarians of the diocese are studying in Trinidad. This year a Nigerian who spent some years in Surinam will be ordained a priest for the diocese of Paramaribo. The diocese also has one permanent deacon.

The beautiful wooden cathedral has been closed for some twelve years but repairs and reconstruction are being planned with donations from the European community. The Surinam government is also going to help. The cathedral is considered a historical monument.

In the city of Paramaribo there are various churches which were built by the Dutch Redemptorists. For example, St. Alphonsus church, St. Clement’s church and St. Rose’s church among others. This last-named church has a very beautiful small altar with a picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help and carved wooden statues of St. Alphonsus, St. Clement and St. Gerard Majella. Today, however, all these churches belong to the diocese.

The Catholic diocese has a network of seventy-seven schools, principally for the early grades, although some for the middle grades. By agreement the government pays the teachers’ salaries. Being a “Catholic school” does not mean that all the students are Catholics, nor all the teachers Catholic. There are also Muslim, Hindustani and Evangelical students as well.

Surinam produces rice, meal, bananas, mangoes, oranges, sweet potatoes, tomatoes. There is plenty of fish here, from both the ocean and fresh waters. There is more pork here than beef. In general, food is expensive. The country does not provide sufficient food for its population, with the result that most foods are imported. I have seen, for example, carrots from Canada, garlic from China, tea from India, apples from the U.S.A., milk and milk products from Holland, coffee from Columbia, beans from Brazil, and canned goods from various countries. For family budgets, food items are usually rated quite high. On the other hand, water and electricity are relatively low.

The county exports bauxite, a primary source for making aluminum. It is also self-sufficient in providing oil, and has good prospects for getting more oil out of the ocean.

Traffic in the city is heavy. There are many automobiles most of them of Japanese make. It is a mark of status to drive a big car, even if it means a long time in paying it off. Traffic jams are frequent.

The Chinese are very big in business here. Besides having stores in the cities carrying Chinese products they also own supermarkets in the suburbs. They work long hours.

There is also a large central market where one can buy fruits, vegetables, seasonings and condiments, as well as meat, fish, clothing, shoes, garden tools, etc., etc.

Paramaribo also has some malls or shopping centers where (and in some of the other commercial stores) you will find products with fixed prices in euros or US dollars. The American dollar is worth 2.75 Surinam dollars. The Brazilian real is worth 1.35 SRD more or less.

The parish of Latour is called Mary Queen of the World. The church is located about 500 meters from the house, and we have Masses on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings. We have also six communities within the parish limits where generally we have Mass two times a month. In the main parish church about 25 persons attend Saturday evening Mass and about 100 persons attend the Mass on Sunday morning.

On January 21, I went with Father Dionisio to Sunny Point, a black community. The liturgy was African style, very animated, and lasted about two hours. At Sunny Point, the liturgy takes place in a tent. There is another black community called Hanna’s Lust where the liturgies, also quite lively and African style, last about 3 hours.

In the community of Pontbuiten Mass is celebrated in a rented room at the Evangelical church. The community is now having a drive to collect money to purchase land where they hope to build a chapel. Last January 21, there were about a dozen adults and another dozen children participating in the Mass.

Another community at Livorno has a chapel dedicated to St. Francis, and also a beautiful picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. About forty to fifty people attended the fortnightly Mass there last January 28th.

The other two communities are Hottuin and Domburg, this last-named has a chapel.

Within the Latour parish (Mary Queen of the World) there are six Catholic schools. Every month the priests visit each school twice for a celebration of the Word with the children. All the students pray and sing just as if they were in a Catholic church, even though only a minority of them are Catholic. It’s a little strange to see Muslim and Hindustani children praying in school as if they were Catholics.

According to statistics, there are more Protestants (25%) here than Catholics (22%). The Octave for Christian Unity (Jan. 21 to 27) was very well organized. At times there is a reunion of representatives of the Christian churches with Muslims, Hindus, and Jews. The Hindus make up about 27% of the population, and the Muslims about 20%.

Here are the names of some of the streets here: Indiragandhiway (for India), Sirwinstonchurchillway (England), Highwaymartinlutherking (for African-Americans).
Because many names are amended to form one word only I am trying to learn Dutch. Many people have advised me to learn that language before trying to learn the sranang tongue. Let’s get to work…

Onze Vadeer die in de hemel zist…. (Our Father who art in heaven)
Wees gegroet Maria, vol van genade (Hail Mary full of grace)
Moeder van Altijddurende Bijstand, bid voor ons (Our Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for us)

Sri Lanka
Tsunami Rehabilitation
Anthony Malaviaratchi C.Ss.R

In response to the Tsunami disaster of December 2004, the Redemptorists in Sri Lanka received approximately $205,185 US dollars from various units of the congregation. The amount is “approximate” due to the varying exchange rate and due to interest accrued on the monies received. There were some cases where individual donations from units could not be acknowledged, as the bank notification did not give sufficient details. For example, one notification stated: “Provincia - 1000 euros”!

The rehabilitation work took quite some time to get started since the tragedy paralysed the whole nation. One good result of this was that steps were not taken in haste and regretted later.

The Redemptorist contributions were utilized as follows:

1) The first project consisted of 10 houses (24’x 29’) in the extreme south of Sri Lanka. The beneficiaries were people who lost their houses but were fortunate enough to have had a plot of land or obtain one, but were too poor to build a house for themselves. Only one family was Catholic, all the others were Buddhists. The project was supervised by the Kandy Catholic Social Work Centre and by Bro. Patrick Perera C.Ss.R. The entire project cost $72,425 US dollars.

2) A housing scheme for fisher folk, mostly Catholics, about 50 kms south of Colombo, who lost their houses. 107 perches of land, five kilometres away from the sea, were bought at the cost of $53,000. Each house was built on 6 perches of land and 9 houses (540 sq.ft. with 2 bedrooms) were constructed costing $5,500. The entire plan cost $105,555 and is named “Alphonsus Town.”

3) Repairs to roofs of 20 houses built by a non-governmental organization.Repairs cost $7,195.

4) 2 houses for two families who had land but were too poor to build a house for themselves. Cost: $10,650.

5) Relief by way of providing basic household requirements for very poor Tsunami victims. Cost: $9,010.

The balance will be given to priests and religious doing rehabilitation work. The confreres express their deep gratitude to the donors and ask the Lord to bless you abundantly!

Feast of Saint Lazaro
Salvador, Bahia. Brazil
Rev. Rosivaldo Mota, C.Ss.R

Preceded by a Triduum, on Sunday, February 1, 2007, we celebrated the Feast of Saint Lazaro. The feast was an occasion to highlight the following: the 270th anniversary of the Shrine of St. Lazaro, a call for religious tolerance and an appeal for reparation for those who have suffered as a result of religious intolerance; a protest against organizations that exclude persons of color, recognition of the V Latin American Conference, and a call to live the Archdiocesan Missionary Year.

The Mass was celebrated by the Vice-Provincial of Bahia, Rev. Antônio Niemiec and the homily delivered by the rector of the shrine, Rev. Roque Silva Alves, who embedded in our hearts the message: “Were it not for the Redemptorist shrine of Saint Lazaro, Salvador would not be the place of refuge and consolation of the people of Bahia that it is.” He was applauded when he announced that the statue of St. Lazaro would lead the procession. It was last removed from its niche thirty-five years prior by a Jesuit priest who was recently assassinated.

The Media gave very good coverage to the entire program, including the Mass, the ancient rituals of cleansing and blessing with popcorn and cleaning of the front steps of the shrine, and spiritual devotions to St. Lazaro with its holy men and women, called “oxirás”. The entire feast was broadcast on TV Bahia, TV Aratu, and published in the newspapers “Correio da Bahia” and “Jornal A Tarde.”

Some of the confreres present were: Revs Antonio Niemiec, Tadeu Pawlik, Giovani Zacaria, Jose Grzywacz, Roque Silva Alves, Vilmar Correia and Rosivaldo Mota. At the luncheon, the confreres we joined by the shrine employees, volunteers, lay missionaries and relatives of Rev. Roque.

In the photo gallery there are some photos that show the joy of the great feast. Perhaps from a distance you may receive the benefits of the popcorn blessing!

A Novena-Mission
Sant’Angelo di Brolo
Fr. Sciortino Calogero, C.Ss.R

For almost twenty years, beginning in 1990, Redemptorists have preached each year a rather unique type of mission for the Christmas period at Sant’Angelo di Brolo. Sant’Angelo is a little town in the province of Messina, in the diocese of Patti (Me). Before us, Capuchin priests used to preach this mission in preparation for Christmas, but when their numbers began to decline the pastor invited the Redemptorists to conduct this novena-mission.

The city has a population of four thousand and many more in the surrounding villages. Each village has its own Church. These are scattered over an area of about fifteen miles. During Advent it is difficult to find enough priests to prepare the people for confession and their Christmas communion. They found a solution, however, by preaching the Novena of Christmas, which was easier.

There are thirteen Novenas conducted in various locals at the same time, scheduled at 5 in the morning and the other at 6 in the evening. Five priests celebrate in the morning and the same priests celebrate in the evening. They begin with confessions and then celebrate Mass. During the day there are other forms of ministry such as catechising the children, visiting the sick, etc. Three diocesan priests help us. For about a hundred years the people of God have been thoroughly evangelised for their Christmas confession and communion in this manner; an apostolate now carried out by the Redemptorists.

In December 2006 the following Redemptorist priests preached the novena-mission: Frs. Vincenzo Romito, Calogero Sciortino, Alberto Ceneri, Marianus Kujur from the Province of Bangalore and Bento Katchingtangu, from the Viceprovince of Angola. These last two Redemptorists study in Rome and live at the General House. The people took these two visiting Redemptorists to their hearts immediately and, along with the parish pastor, invited them to come again next year.

Madrid, Spain
The Region of Europe South
Council Meeting

The Council of Europe South, consisting of the President, Fr. Antonio de Luca, Provincial of the Naples Province, the Secretary, Fr. Antonio Gomes, Provincial of the Province of Lisbon and the Treasurer, Fr. José Luis Bartolomé, Provincial of the Province of Madrid met in Madrid, Spain, January 27-30.

It was a fraternal meeting to which the formators of the Region were also invited, especially the formators of the interprovincial novitiate at Ciorani, Frs. Antonio Perillo of the Naples Province and C. Alberto Eseberri of the Madrid Province. The Prefects of Students were also invited to attend of whom only Fr. Antonio Queseda of the Madrid Province was able to be present.

On this occasion, in addition to the ordinary work of the Council, we discussed the operation of the interprovincial novitiate, taking into account all the work that has gone into remodelling the monastery to house the novitiate; as well as the generous spirit of the confreres who collaborate in the formation of the Novices and the pleasant atmosphere that prevails there.

As a result of our discussions we appointed a Commission for Formation in order to produce a Ratio Formationis for the whole Region that would include all levels of formation both initial and permanent.

There will be an important meeting in the context of formation during Easter Week, April 11-14 of this year, in which we will bring together those involved in all the stages of formation of the Region, formators as well as those being formed. Fr. General and the Vicar General will be present to speak on the Communicanda on Redemption and other related matters.

Cortona, Italy
Interprovincial Meeting on Formation
Provinces of Naples and Rome

A meeting on permanent formation consisting of the superiors, pastors and formators of the two Italian Provinces was held in Cortona at the Hotel Neumann, formerly our House of Studies, from February 12 - 14. It was organized by the respective Provincials, Frs. Danilo Bissacco and Antonio de Luca.

The subject of the meeting was the restructuring of the Congregation, already taking place and its effects on Europe and the two Italian Provinces.

The meeting began with the reading of Communicanda N° 2 on Redemption in order to promote reflection and orientation on how to carry out the restructuring in Italy. This resulted in a specific questionnaire that was given to the Superiors to be discussed with their communities. The response of the communities will be the basis for the opportune decisions to be taken by the Assembly of the interprovincial Chapter planned for next June according to the juridical process envisaged with the approval of the respective Provincial Chapters.

The seven Novices of Europe South in Ciorani also took part in the meeting together with their formators. The peaceful and silent atmosphere of Cortona facilitated the fruitful result of our work and produced a joyful and fraternal spirit during this time spent together.

Sanctuary of our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rome
Pilgrimage with facsimile of OMPH Icon to Brazil
Fr. Darci José Nicioli, C.Ss.R, Superior.

Last January for 18 days together with Fr. Visuri and the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help I visited seven Redemptorist churches in five different regions of Brazil. The sanctuaries visited were Belém (PA); Fortaleza (CE); Goiania (GO); Curitiba (PR); Sao Paulo (SP): Aparecida (SP) and Sao Joao da Boa Vista (SP). It was an indescribable experience and the power of the Icon as an evangelizing and catechizing instrument for the people can only be understood by those who lived through it.

We were also good propagandists for the ‘Mother Sanctuary’ in Rome in order to make it better known and to establish an affectionate bond with the original Icon.

We were fortunate that the regional press, national T.V and periodicals covered us and helped much to promote the event that increased the attendance of the faithful.

A question comes to mind: why don’t we repeat this experience in our churches worldwide especially on the occasion of the 150th anniversary (2016) of the handing over of the Icon to the Congregation by Pope Pius IX? It could be a fine opportunity to propagate the Christocentric message of the Icon, renew devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help and ‘make her better known to the world’.

This should deserve a Postulatum at the next General Chapter in 2009. Perhaps there will be a good Provincial to support the idea. It is worth thinking about!

Read below the beautiful account of Fr. Bruno Visuri, an experienced missioner of the Roman Province and present Prefect of our Sanctuary in Rome.

Brazil
Dreaming with open eyes!
Bruno Visuri, C.Ss.R
.

Editor’s note: Fr. Bruno Visuri is Prefect of the Church of Sant’Alfonso and of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rome.

This dream with open eyes lasted three weeks… I cannot describe otherwise my trip to Brazil with the Icon of our Lady of Perpetual Help, a facsimile of the original Icon venerated in the Church of Sant’Alfonso, Via Merulana, Rome.

My long life as a missionary, a son of St. Alphonsus, a promoter of the ‘Glories of Mary’ in a hundred missions preached in various Italian communities has been enveloped and nourished by a dream: to make Our Lady of Perpetual Help known and loved. But after much fatigue I have not always succeeded and this has left a little disappointment in the depth of my heart.

At last during my trip to Brazil this dream became a reality. From Belem through Fortaleza, Goiania, San Paulo, Curitiba, the Sanctuary of the Divine Eternal Father and Aparecida, I realised with indescribable joy how Our Lady of Perpetual Help is loved, venerated and the object of prayer. What a spectacle of faith and love is the Perpetual Novena beginning at five in the morning and ending late at night!

But what astounds one most is how these overflowing crowds affect one with their way of praying and singing. They pray and sing not only with their lips but also with their hearts, their facial muscles and their whole being.

Let those who doubt about the joy of the Christian life take a holiday in Brazil first and then we will talk about it!

To those who made this trip possible, Fr. General and Fr. Rector of the General House, Fr Darci José Nicioli, I say sincere thanks because they made me understand that God always keeps the best wine until the end of the feast.

One of the Restructuring commission’s primary tasks was to reflect on feedback and responses it had received on the December 2005 document, "Work in Progress, Some Proposals."

4. Larry Kaufmann and Brendan Kelly working. Most comments and reflections arose during the mid-sexennial Regional Meetings of 2006.  Influenced by these constructive contributions, the commission felt it was now necessary to 'restructure the restructuring document'.  It is intended that after meetings with the General Council later this year, a final document will take shape.

5. The Triduum of Saint Lazaro was celebrated from January 25 through 28th at and around the Church of Saint Lazaro in the neighborhood of Federação.  São Lazaro is syncretized with Omolu -- the orixá governing sickness and health -- and during mass inside the church worshippers receive a banho de pipoca (popcorn bath), a ritual common in candoblé.

6. The African element in Salvador's culture is very pronounced. This is true in its music, dances, religion, cuisine and arts and crafts. The chief African cultural influences are Benin, Yoruba and Bantu.

7. Most of Salvador's residents are of African descent. The famous mixture of races so characteristic of Brazil - European, African and Amerindian - is ever present.

8. Image of Saint Lazaro. The main religions in Salvador are Catholicism, Candoblé, Protestantism, and Spiritism.  The most characteristic feature of Salvador's religious life is known as syncretism. Ardently fought by purists, it is a natural part of life for most to worship African divinities and Catholic saints, and sometimes both at once.
