New Redemptorist bishop: Rev. Jósef Słaby, C.Ss.R. of the Vice Province of Resistencia for the new Territorial Prelature of Esquel, Argentina.
The Holy Father has appointed the first Bishop Prelate of Esquel, Argentina, Rev. Jósef Słaby, C.Ss.R., presently superior and parish priest of the Redemptorist community of Esquel.
Father Słaby was born on March 1, 1958 in Zeleznikowa, in the diocese of Tarnów, Poland. He finished high school and entered the Redemptorist seminary in Tuchow. He made his first profession on February 2, 1979. He made his final profession on August 15, 1983. After completing his philosophical and theological studies, he was ordained a priest on June 17, 1984.
In 1985 he began his missionary service in the formation community of Quilmes, Argentina, in charge of the seminarians. He continued in formation until 1992. From 1992 he was parochial vicar and, from 1993 to 1995, pastor of the parish of San Vicente in the diocese of Puerto Iguazú. From 1996 to 2004, besides being once again in charge of Quilmes and parish pastor, he was the legal representative of the Redemptorist- founded college of Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Alphonsus Institute of Quilmes. He also served contemporaneously as Vice Provincial Consultor and Vicar Vice Provincial of Resistencia. He served as Vice Provincial Superior of Resistencia from 2004 to 2007.

The church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the city of Esquel has been designated the Cathedral Church.
With the erection of the new Prelature, Argentina now has 72 ecclesiastical jurisdictions.

An earthquake the magnitude of 6.2 occurred on January 8th in Costa Rica, only thirty kilometers from our parish of Santo Cristo de La Agonia in Alajuela. A nearby volcano, Poás, is a popular tourist attraction, but volcanologists say that the volcano played no part in the earthquake. Tourists have gotten out of Costa Rica safely but residents and business owners are still reeling in the aftermath of the earthquake that killed at least 23 people and destroyed more than 400 homes. Many roads were also heavily damaged. The families of many confreres live in this part of the province of San Salvador but it appears everyone has been safely accounted for. |
On January 28, 2009, the Holy Father accepted the resignation from the governance of the Diocese of Bom Jesus da Lapa (Brazil), presented by Bishop Francisco Batistela, C.Ss.R. having reached and surpassed the age of retirement. The Pope has appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Bom Jesus da Lapa (Brazil), the Rev. Don José César Teixeira Valmor, SDB. He will be ordained bishop and installed on March 29th.

Situated across the street from St. Patrick’s Redemptorist Church in Toronto is a new pub named: Sin and Redemption. St. Patrick’s may look to the patrons somewhat like this “fish eye” photo of the church after leaving the pub, but hopefully the patrons will be able to make the walk across the street to St. Patrick’s and receive from our confreres...
Grace and Redemption for all!

NEWS FROM THE PROVINCES:
Czech Republic
Redemptorists gather from Czech Republic and Slovakia
Martin Huk, C.Ss.R.
 |
Five Redemptorists from the Prague province, 16 from the Michalovce Vice Province and 12 confreres from the Bratislava Vice Province, led by their respective Major Superiors, Fr. Stanislav Přibyl, Fr. Jaroslav Štelbaský, and Fr. Michal Zamkovský, met from February 17 to 19th, 2009 in the Redemptorist house of Králiky in the Czech Republic.
The purpose of the meeting was for the Redemptorists of this region to come together and reflect, share and plan for the life and ministry of the Church in Eastern Europe under its pastoral care.
|
 |
Bishop Milan Chauter, C.Ss.R., led a day of retreat and reflection on Tuesday. He noted that the Church in these countries is living through a time of a different crisis today than it had in the past. The storied past and spiritual wealth of the confreres of the persecution era is a great legacy, but today the Church has practical and financial crises it must face to insure the continuing good of the mission in Eastern Europe. Evening time was open for sharing of personal experiences, life, ministry, missions and about the new challenges of being Redemptorists today. The day concluded with benediction. |
 |
 |
On Wednesday, February 18, there were three working sessions led by talks given by Fr. Kazimierz Fryzeł, C.Ss.R., from Warsaw. His topics were: “The pastoral challenges facing Eastern Europe today” and “Renewing the Covenant by proclaiming the Word of God and celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation.” The Eucharist was celebrated in both the Byzantine and Latin Rites.
The provincial and vice provincial councils also took the opportunity to meet together for sharing, exchange of information and mutual planning. A similar meeting to be held next year in Slovakia is being organized by the Bratislava vice province.
Of course, evenings were a time for “gaudeamus” and fellowship among the confreres, which was enjoyed by all. We invite you to view the websites of our three units: www.cssr.cz (Prague), www.cssr.sk (Bratislava), www.misionar.sk (Michalovce). |

Biography of a Redemptorist Bishop: Mons. Jorge Gottau, C.Ss.R., 1917-1994
 |
In January the book Jorge Gottau, the Bishop of Human Advancement was introduced in Buenos Aires. It is written by the catechist Juan Carlos Pisano.
In the book, Pisano brings together historical data with oral and written eye-witness accounts and photographs contributed by family members and friends of the first bishop of the diocese of Añatuya, Argentina. It offers a concrete way for reflecting upon one’s own commitment to evangelization, bringing the Word of God to bear on the promotion of human dignity.
Bishop Gottau, Redemptorist missionary, dedicated his life to evangelization and to the defense of the human person, principally of the most needy in the diocese of Añatuya. His life is a worthy subject for our knowledge and his work is worthy of our support in view of giving a commitment to solidarity with the poor.
In 1970 he created the national collective “more x less,” designed for the most needy dioceses of Argentina, creating a common sharing of goods among Argentinean Christians, by which those with “more” helped those with “less.”
When he reached 75 years of age, in December 1992, he left the diocese of Añatuya and at an emotional farewell reception was named “illustrious citizen.” He died on April 24, 1994, at the age of 77 in Buenos Aires.

Paraguay Meeting of Religious and Lay Advisors of Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Ministry in Atyra
Rodrigo Velez, C.Ss.R.
The Third Meeting of religious and lay advisors for Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Ministry was held in Atyra, Paraguay. Brothers and sisters from Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Argentina participated. This meeting takes place every two years in the region of the Southern Cone of South America, where exploration and formation in a family and spirited atmosphere makes of it a true Redemptorist meeting. Its purpose is to bring Redemption to young people. Pastoral outreach to youth grows in so far as we put ourselves forward to enrich ourselves, one person with another, knowing and tasting the same dream.
We present here the letter which we wrote to share with you our joy and commitment:
Letter from Atyra:
To the Redemptorist youth of the Southern Cone of South America:
|
 |
“He summoned those whom he wanted and they came to him....” (Mk.3:13-14)
Under the theme “Identity and Mission of the Redemptorist Youth Advisor,” we have called together youth, religious sisters and Redemptorist brothers and priests from Youth and Vocational Ministry in the Southern Cone to the city of Atyra (Paraguay) for the Third Sub-regional Meeting.
In the Guarani language “Atyra” means “a place for meeting,” and it is exactly what we have experienced during these days at Marianella Retreat House. Furthermore, the retreat house name, “Marianella” is the place where Alphonsus was born and where he first sensed in his youth the call of Jesus Christ in his heart. In an atmosphere of fraternity and joy, we shared deep moments of prayer, formation and reflection, sharing our experiences which enrich us in our option for the young.
Dear young people, we appreciate in you your joy, your continuing search for God, your enthusiasm, your commitment to what is necessary and your identity with our missionary charism.
Nevertheless, we cannot help but see the great challenges that face us in a society which has lost any deep sense of life, any consciousness of the value of the human person, and any capacity for communication and for building together with others.
Faced with such a world, we, as Redemptorist youth, enlightened with the power of the Holy Spirit and the still valid testimony of Alphonsus, feel the urgent need to “give an explanation of the reason for our hope” (I Pt.3:15) for building up the Kingdom of God. We are conscious that we are on a path of continual conversion, since Redemption necessarily comes first through our lives. Only thus can we be true witnesses of the Redeemer and sharers in the same love with which God loves young people.
We want to be bold transformers for a new world, a world that is more just, more fraternal and that lives more in solidarity. It would be a world in which everyone would have a place, particularly those who are now excluded. We wish to risk our own security in the adventure of announcing the Good News to the most poor, incarnating ourselves in their reality, promoting their dignity and building community.
These gatherings of youth advisors from the Southern Cone are valuable and enriching for us. We are grateful for the contribution and support of the (vice) provinces and we ask that they continue to accompany us and commit themselves to Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Ministry. By promoting opportunities for formation and strengthening of the youth advisors and coordinators, they are enabling us to respond to the challenges of the new millennium, under the always hopeful foundation of our Redemptorist spirituality.
For this reason it is with great joy that we invite you to the next Regional Meeting for the Southern Cone which will take place in 2011. It is for youth, priests, religious women and Redemptorist religious from the Southern Cone. Its purpose is that we may continue to construct paths to communion through an attentive listening to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit.
We send you our fraternal embrace in the Redeemer. We are confident of the maternal protection of our Mother of Perpetual Help.
From the lands of the Guarani we send you our blessing:
“Ñandejara tanderavosa, ha omguesaká nde rape, ha tómee ndeve ipyhaguapy. Amén”
(May God bless you, may God enlighten your path, and may God’s peace be with you. Amen.)

REDEMPTORIST HISTORY :
Rome
Editorial Meeting on the “History of the Congregation”
Martin Leitgöb, C.Ss.R.
From February 22 to 26th an editorial meeting was held in the Historical Institute at the General House by those working on the History of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. The editorial board consists of chairperson Dr. Otto Weiss, of
Vienna, formerly an assistant at the Historical Institute, Marian Brudzisz (Krakow), Jean Beco (Roma), Martin Leitgöb (Vienna), Giuseppe Orlandi (Roma), Giuseppe Russo (Agrigento),and Giovanni Vicidomini (Pagani).
|
The main topic of discussion at the meeting was the preparation of Book I of the Second Volume of the history, which describes the period between 1793 (the General Chapter of Redemptorist reunification) and 1820 (the death of Saint Clement). It is hoped that this volume will be published by the end of the year. Three more Books are planned covering the years up to 1855 (General Chapter IX).
The genesis of this continuing project for a new and extensive history of the Congregation dates back to the early 1990’s. Book I of the First Volume was published in 1993 under the direction of Father Francis Chiovaro – subsequently translated into English (by Fr. Robert Fenili, C.Ss.R. of the Denver Province). Book II of the First Volume is due back from the printer soon.
As you can see, this is a further step - in the long road that remains to be done - in the realization of what will be a monumental work. |

A LAST LOOK:
A last look in photos
Goodbye to Winter, Welcome to Spring!
Editor’s note: The beautiful scenic winter photos were sent by Martin Huk, C.Ss.R. from Králiky Czech Republic. The train photos came from the state of Iowa, USA. A good reminder to those of us who live and work in the Northern Hemisphere of what we will begin to leave behind with the coming of Spring just one week away!
