FROM THE EDITOR:

The XXIV General Chapter is now history. But its effects will be felt for many years to come. You will notice we have emblazoned our new sexenniel theme on our masthead.

Our new Father General, Michael Brehl, has written a letter to the Congregation, which we reproduce in part here and link to the full text because in it he very succinctly summarizes the work of the XXIV General Chapter. Much of what he summarizes can be found and will remain for some time on our General Chapter web site. There you can have access to all the written material, the recorded Chapter sessions, the videos showing the Capitulars at prayer, work and play outside the Aula Magna, and the photo albums.

We will upload the updated documents and decisions of the Chapter as the General Council redacts them and makes them available.

Grace and Redemption for all!

ACTIVITY OF THE GENERAL GOVERNMENT:

Letter from Father General:

To the Members and Co-Workers of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer:

Dear Confreres, Sisters, and Partners in Mission,

As the XXIV General Chapter draws to a close in Rome, I want to greet you all and thank you for your prayers, support, messages and engagement in the process of this important event in the life of our Congregation. I also want to briefly share with you what we have accomplished. In the next months, you will receive much more complete communications from the General Chapter itself, along with the decisions we have made to renew our Vita apostolica and our mission to the abandoned and the poor.

In the past four weeks, we have accomplished a great deal. We carefully examined our present situation across the world. This examination was greatly assisted by the Regional Presentations, the Report of Fr. Tobin – Superior General, the Economic Reports, and the presence and participation of two lay associates (Anne Walsh and Ageeth Potma). We then grappled with the Instrumentum laboris, which is the fruit of six years of study and reflection. And we made decisions.

Letter from the Brothers present at the XXIV General Chapter
Rome, November 12, 2009

Dear Confreres,

“Give thanks to the Lord because He has done marvelous things”

1. The XXIV General Chapter is coming to its close. This Chapter made many decisions that affect directly and indirectly the lives of the confreres all over the world. The Chapter wholeheartedly supported the process of “Restructuring” the Congregation and invited all of us to personal, communal, and pastoral conversion. This animates us toward growth in missionary availability in order to evangelize “the most abandoned, principally the poor”, with renewed hope, hearts, and structured plans. The Chapter chose a new Superior General, Fr. Michael Brehl, and a new General Council for the next six years. The Brothers, as all the confreres, are dedicated to this process of conversion and renewal.

2. The Book of Proverbs says that under the Heavens there is a time for everything. The members of the XXIV General Chapter, particularly we Brother Capitulars, are happy and thankful to God because for the first time in the history of the Redemptorist Congregation, a Brother was elected to the General Council. Brother Jeffrey Rolle, native of Dominica, member of the Province of Baltimore (USA), formator and president of the General Secretariat for the Brothers during the past sexennium, assumes with joy the noble mission of contributing toward leadership of the Congregation in the new sexennium of 2009-2015.

3. This historical moment is a moment of celebration for all Redemptorists. It fills us with joy and hope. The election of Brother Jeffrey confirms the importance of the Brothers in the Congregation. According to our Constitutions, all Redemptorists, Fathers and Brothers, are fundamentally equal, and all contribute according to their personal gifts and charism - and according to their given ministry - toward the Mission of the Congregation: announcing the Gospel to the most abandoned, principally the poor, and giving witness to the Plentiful Redemption of Christ. We form one missionary body dedicated to the new proposal of restructuring, in light of a greater faithfulness to our charism in the Church and in the world.

4. We desire that all confreres of the Congregation rejoice with us in this historical moment of our journey as consecrated Redemptorists. In the person of Brother Jeffrey and the other members of the General Government, we feel co-responsible in promoting vocations to the Brotherhood and to the witness of Redemptorist religious life, within the Congregation and beyond. We pray that the new General Government be led by the Holy Spirit in order to animate all the confreres in leadership in the process of Restructuring, in light of a greater faithfulness toward our mission. Accept the support, prayers and fraternal embrace of the members of the General Secretariat for the Brothers of the past sexennium, present in Rome for the XXIV General Chapter of the Congregation.

Fraternally,
Brothers Jeffrey Rolle, Benjamin Posvo, Joel de Guzman, Michael Duxbury, João Batista de Viveiros, and Father. Enrique López.
