Dear Confreres, Sisters, Redemptorist Associates, and friends,

On Wednesday, November 9, we celebrated the 279th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Congregation. On this date, St. Alphonsus Liguori and five companions initiated the Institute in Scala, with meditation, Mass of the Holy Spirit, the Te Deum, and thanksgiving to God. It was a simple beginning from which grew the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.

As always, this is a joyful occasion for us, and an opportunity to call to mind the many ways in which God has blessed us over the history of our Congregation. In our day we are called to continue ‘building’ on the foundation prepared by St. Alphonsus – and that foundation is Jesus Christ as revealed to us in the Gospels and the lives of those to whom we are sent.

For the sake of the Mission, we ask God to renew our hope, our hearts and our structures for today’s world.

May Jesus the Redeemer bless you abundantly and call you to an ever deeper immersion into his mission. May the Holy Spirit fill you with wisdom and courage so that you may bear prophetic witness to the Gospel. And may our Mother of Perpetual Help accompany you always as you proclaim the Gospel ever anew!

Your brother in the Redeemer,
Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R.
Superior General

Happy 279th anniversary of the Congregation to all Confreres. Further below is an account of a three-fold celebration held by the Redemptorists in Slovakia recently as well as an account of the centenary celebrations in the Province of Sainte-Anne de Beauprè in Canada and one of our parishes in Texas, USA. Also, the former Region of Mumbai has become the Vice Province of Majella. All these events speak of the vitality of our Congregaton. The heroism and history of the Redemptorists in Slovakia, Canada, Texas and India renews our hearts and our hopes in the purpose of our Congregation.

The following two news items we have recently received from the Vice Province of Bangkok and the Vice Province of Manaus also make us proud to be a religious congregation that concerns itself with living among and assisting the most abandoned:

Bangkok:

Reporter Clifford Coonan of the Irish times interviewed Fr. Joe Maier, C.Ss.R., director of the Mercy Centre in Klong Toey, in “Fears that river may burst its bank cause thousands to flee Bangkok,” which appeared
in the October 29 issue.

Fr. Maier said that many people, especially the elderly, were refusing to leave their homes, some from nostalgia but most from fear of theft. “It is an absolute fact that Bangkok is now flooding, flooded, and will continue to flood as this huge mass of water flows through and around Bangkok into the sea,” he said.

“Over 1,000 slum kindergarten children who attend our schools live in now flooded shacks. Their slums, and thus our kindergartens, will be flooded for the next two months. At least so the weatherman tells us,” he said, adding that it will take another month to repair the school and the shacks they call home. Food prices have risen sharply in the capital, he said, noting that the price of eggs nearly tripled and supplies in shops are running low.

Tens of thousands of people have fled Bangkok as the Chao Phraya River swelled to a new high in Thailand’s worst floods since 1942. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the country is facing “the most critical natural disaster that has ever happened in Thai history,” and called for politicians to unite to help with relief efforts. The government has introduced an emergency five-day public holiday and roads have been blocked as citizens tried to get out of the city of 12 million. At least 377 people have died since July and 2.2 million people, including hundreds of thousands in Bangkok’s submerged northern districts and in industrialized provinces, have been affected.

Manaus:

Padre Amarildo Luciano, C.Ss.R., writes to us about the Amazonian cloudburst that destroyed the student formation house:

“On Monday, October 10, 2011, a severe storm suddenly overtook the city of Manaus and caused extensive damage. The Redemptorist formation residence, “Copiosa Redenção”, (Plentiful Redemption) was practically destroyed by the high winds and rain. At the time, nine persons were residing in the home - six philosophy seminarians and three priests. They make up the community that cares for the Parishes of Saint Lazarus and Immaculate Heart of Mary, in the barrios of St. Lazarus and Morro da Liberdade. The two Redemptorist parishes total 16 faith communities between the two. The priests are the parish leaders and the seminarians help them in their service to the People of God.

Since the storm, the students have been living in a rented home until the seminary is able to be reconstructed. At present the destroyed building is inhabitable. Thanks be to God, no one was hurt.

We are presently regrouping, contacting friends and regaining our inner forces as we continue our missionary work and seminary studies. Our objective is to reconstruct the house and continue the longstanding tradition of formation of Redemptorist priests and Brothers – missionaries all - for the service of the Church in Amazônia and the world.

The community is one in solidarity in this project. For the reconstruction, we will need much strength and prayers. We are beginning by gathering necessary books for seminary study, as most were destroyed by the rain. Many volumes were lost in the rubble. Some will be able to be refurbished. Our missionary work in the parishes continues normally, however, despise the destruction and lack of materials.

We bless God for the life and the vocation of our seminarians. We do not despair because of this great loss. Our faith and our hope animate us and will continue always. Forced to take this step backward actually propels us forward even farther.

We ask for your prayers for all the Redemptorists of Amazônia in the Vice-Province of Manaus, especially for all who are wholeheartedly aiding us in in the reconstruction of our dear Copiosa Redenção Residence.”

Editor’s note: In these two photos of the chapel you will see the large wooden cross hand carved by the late Bishop Jacson Rodrigues, C.Ss.R., when he was a formator. On the floor is the image of Our Lady of Aparecida, which was knocked off her pedestal, but undamaged. Two signs of heavenly protection in the midst of the destruction.

Any assistance to help the Vice Province of Manaus would be appreciated as their resources are very few. Please send your help to the Econome General on behalf of the Vice Province of Manaus.

NEWS FROM THE CONFERENCES:

Conference of Europe
IV Assembly of the Conference of Redemptorists of Europe
Jacek Zdrzałek, C.Ss.R.

Twenty-eight Redemptorists from nineteen Units took parts in the IV Assembly of the Conference of Europe at Marianella in the Province of Dublin from October 24th to 27th. The Assembly was led by Coordinator, Fr. Jacek Zdrzałek, who took office on June, 1, 2011.

The Assembly elected two Consultors to assist Fr. Zdrzalek: Fr. Pedro Lopez (Provincial of the Province of Madrid) and Fr. Johannes Römelt (Provincial of the Province of Saint Clement). Fr. Zdzisław Stanula studying in Paris, France was elected the Secretary.

The Assembly finalized work on a document about “Apostolic Priorities”. The Assembly recognized that the Conference of Europe is missioned to:

“Explicitly Proclaim the Word in an increasingly secular Europe:

a) to all those affected by this increased Secularization and affected by the contemporary human life issues (life and death, sexuality, relationships, the new realities of family life, addiction, promotion of social justice, etc);
b) to all those who are trying to stay faithful to the Church, and those who are estranged from the Church, at a very challenging time in the Church’s history;
c) to young people and young adults and
d) to migrants and to “those left behind.”

During the meeting’s ten sessions there was much discussion about the important challenges facing the Conference - about new initiatives and about new Interprovincial Communities. Some of these discussions resulted in processes put into motion. There we shared experiences from the past about international communities and the Assembly talked about new possibilities for Interprovincial Communities in Europe.

Much time was dedicated for discussion about the fragile Units of the Euopean Conference and the fragility of various levels of our religious life and community life in Europe.

Formation in common was also one of the most important aspects of Assembly business and possible directions were discussed. Preparations were begun to establish different Secretariats and Commissions.

Fr. Piotr Sulkowski from the Province of Rome gave a multimedia presentation about the preparations underway for the Youth Meeting in Sardinia in 2013 and about past Youth Meetings in Europe.

One of the weaknesses of our present situation is a lack of knowledge among Redemptorists in the units of the Conference about our present work throughout the Conference. So there were discussions about proper means of communicating the work of the Conference.

The Assembly chose our house in Monparnasse in Paris, in the Paris-Lyon province, to be the permanent residence for the Coordinator and Secretary. But for this first year a temporary residence will be maintained at the parish of San Gioacchino in Rome. The Conference’s first year operating budget was approved.

During the Assembly the participants had the opportunity to visit the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin and to see the exhibition about famous Irish High Crosses as well as to travel to Monasterboice in Boyne Valley National Monuments where exists one of these famous Crosses. There we experienced Irish music, dance and tradition.

Germany
General Assembly of German Speaking Provinces
Lorenz Voith, C.Ss.R.

Shaping the future, full of trust.

Under this motto the General Assembly of the provinces of Vienna, Munich and Saint Clement took place from October 3-6, 2011 in Würzburg. More than 80 Fathers, Brothers and students took part in the meeting. The General Superior, Fr. Michael Brehl and two general consulters, Fr. Alberto Eseverri and Fr. Jacek Dembek, were also present on this occasion. The new coordinator of the European Conference, Fr. Jacek Zdrzalek, was present as a guest.

Statements, concerns and challenges (“how are things going in our provinces? – looking at ourselves) from representatives of all the involved provinces were discussed in group meetings. “Our-Being-Redemptorists in the future” was the theme of the session given by Dr. Georg Beirer (Bamberg), as well of the ensuing discussions . Fr. Hans Schalk (Munich) and Fr. Martin Leitgöb (Vienna) tried in their sessions to bring both St. Alphonsus and St. Clement into the present time and to describe the special personal and pastoral concerns of both these saints.

On the third day Father General Michael Brehl, the new coordinator Father Zdrzalek, and the provincials of Vienna (Fr. Lorenz Voith), Munich (P. Edmund Hipp) and Saint Clement (P. Johannes Römelt), reported on the current state of affairs in their respective areas of responsibility. There are currently 380 members in the German-speaking provinces (including the Netherlands, Flanders and Switzerland).

Other important elements during this province Assembly were the common prayer, the celebration of the Eucharist (in the church of Saint Alfons in Würzburg, where the German-speaking formation house is located) and the get together in the diocesan retreat-house Himmelpforten.

Fr. General stressed in his sermon on the feast of Bl. Francis Xaver Seelos that the whole congregation is in a process of restructuring; this includes the creation of 'conferences' which will promote new common pastoral projects as well as increased collaboration in formation and deeper solidarity beyond the boundaries of the provinces. He thanked the Vienna, Munich and Saint Clement provinces for the “new types of structure and collaboration that are already in place” (The Federation), which can be an example to other Units.

Father General also reported on the challenges in the other Conferences and the gratifyingly strong increase of members in Asia and Africa.

Finally he thanked all the three provinces for their great historical contributions to the worldwide propagation of the Congregation: “From your provinces (Austria, Germany, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland) numerous missions and provinces originated worldwide”. Father General also underlined the sexennial theme of the Congregation: “The Gospel must be preached anew“ (Clement Maria Hofbauer), as well as the “common mission and the joy in our vocation that we should never lose”.

NEWS FROM THE PROVINCES:

India
Inauguration of the Vice Province of Majella
Joseph Ivel Mendanha, C.Ss.R.

It was the prophetic suggestion during a visitation of the then Superior General, Juan Manuel Lasso de la Vega to Bangalore that initiated a process towards the formation of a Region - and now a Vice Province along the West Coast of India. At the Provincial Chapter of the Bangalore Province in 1993 Fr. Lasso urged the confreres of this area of India to work towards the formation of the Region.

The process was initiated and on the April 14, 1999 the first Regional Assembly was held and Mumbai was formed as a Region of the Bangalore Province. There were 21 priests, 2 Brothers, 3 temporarily professed students, and a few students in the earlier stages of formation. There were two houses at the time in Mumbai (Chembur) and in Goa (Porvorrim). There was a gradual growth in the numbers of confreres, regular assemblies, annual meetings, and in the houses.

Finally, the process towards the formation of a Vice Province was commenced. This process culminated with the formation of a Vice Province on October 16, 2011. The Confreres of this Region of the West Coast of India, formerly known as the Region of Mumbai chose to have St. Gerard Majella as their special patron drawing inspiration from him for his closeness to people especially the poor and abandoned. Hence they chose to have the name the Vice Province of Majella.

The Inauguration took place with an Eucharistic liturgy at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church in Chembur in Mumbai. The Church was filled to capacity with parishioners and special invitees. Redemptorists from the Vice Province and quite a few from the Province concelebrated with Most Rev. Fr. Michael Brehl the Superior General. In his homily, Fr General called on the confreres of the Vice Province of Majella to imitate St. Gerard in his closeness to people, his compassion especially for the poor, his ability to listen with an open heart to all types of people and finally to make Jesus Christ the center of their lives and apostolate. Fr. Arulanandam the Provincial of the Bangalore Province, read the decree of formation of the Vice Province and then the Statute of St. Gerard in the Church was incensed and venerated. The Eucharist was followed by a program and dinner to which the guests were invited and entertained in the Our Lady of Perpetual Succor School hall.

The following day the confreres of the newly formed Vice Province of Majella had their first Vice Provincial Chapter at the Carmelite Spirituality Centre just outside the city of Mumbai. The chapter began with the Eucharist during which Fr. Joseph Abraham was installed by Father General as the First Vice Provincial and his vicar Fr. Eugene D’silva and Fr. Paul Julius his second consultor took office. Fr General addressed the chapter at which all the finally professed confreres of the Vice Province were capitulars. The Chapter had the elections for two extra ordinary consultors and Fr. Vivian Moniz and Fr. Ivel Mendanha were elected. The Chapter deliberated and made some important decisions regarding the Apostolate, Formation and finances for the new Vice Province.

With grateful hearts and aware of this momentous and historic moment the confreres celebrated God’s graciousness during the Chapter. A moment of special celebration was the 90th birthday of our most senior and still very active member of the Vice Province, Fr. Antonio Rodrigues, C.Ss.R.

Today there are 31 priests, 2 Brothers, 2 finally professed students, 8 temporarily professed students, 2 Novices, and 13 students of Philosophy. There are 6 houses in the Vice Province (Chembur in Mumbai which is the Vice provincial residence and has an active parish dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Naigaon Vasai in Maharashtra which has a parish dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, Alangar in Mangalore, Porvorrim in Goa, Sanquelim in the north of Goa which has a parish, and Varca in South Goa which is the house of Studies for Philosophy Students dedicated to St. Gerard Majella).

The Apostolate of the Vice Province of Majella has a special focus, namely: the Migrants who come from all over India especially rural India and live and work in the areas covered by the Vice province (the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Western Karnataka). Apart from ministry to the migrants the confreres are actively involved in the preaching of the Word of God through parish missions, retreats, catechetical seminars and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal to people of all age groups. There is a very vibrant apostolate to young people. Many confreres are involved in preaching retreats to Religious, Seminarians and Priests. Some confreres are involved in the ministry and chaplaincy to particular groups of the abandoned like the domestic/house workers and sailors. The three parishes in the vice province are very active and modeled on Redemptorist Parish ministry. Two of the confreres teach full time in the Redemptorist Theology Institute at Mt. St. Alphonsus in Bangalore.

The Confreres now step into the future with renewed hearts and hopes for the mission in this newly formed structure of the Vice Province of Majella.

Quebec, Canada
A resume of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Province of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre (1911 – 2011)
Mario Boies, C.Ss.R. , Provincial Superior of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre

In 2011, Our Lord gave us the joy of celebrating an historic event: the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Redemptorist Province of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre (1911-2011)! These festivities, celebrated under the theme “In the footsteps of the Redeemer”, were a moment of grace motivating us to continue undertaking our mission of sowing hope of abundant redemption, following the lead of our founder Saint Alphonsus Liguori.

Friday, June 3rd, 2011: The opening of the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of our Province was presided over by our Father General, Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R. This took place at a Eucharistic celebration during the Roman canonical visitation of the General Government.

Saturday, July 30th, 2011: Under brilliant sunshine, the Redemptorists welcomed more than 550 of their relatives, lay collaborators and friends to celebrate the historic canonical erection of the Province that had taken place on July 26th, 1911, some thirty-three years after the Redemptorists arrived in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre in 1878.

This large festive gathering highlighted a century of extraordinary commitment by more than 1000 Redemptorist confreres, in Canada, Quebec, Vietnam, Japan, Uruguay and Haiti.

For the occasion, a huge tent was raised on the Redemptorist’ grounds. The official opening was followed by a brief historical context (1910-1911) and a mass of Thanksgiving in the Basilica presided over by Father Mario Boies, C.Ss.R., Provincial Superior. During the mass he also accepted the renewal of vows of four Redemptorist students in a ceremony that was both solemn and moving.

After a home cooked dinner, the guests attended an historical presentation on the 100 years of the province, followed by a variety of activities, such as a visit to the Museum of Sainte-Anne, a display on the Redemptorists, an audio guide tour of the Sanctuary, etc. A musical feast followed by the Eucharist and a candle-light procession closed the celebrations.

Tuesday to Thursday September 13-15, 2011: More than 40 confreres from Canada and the United States met for the first assembly of Redemptorists of the North American Conference. It was a time of extraordinary fellowship that allowed us to reinforce our Redemptorist solidarity and to surface the missionary challenges in North America.

Saturday, September 24th, 2011: Two important commemorative anniversaries occurred in 2011 for our Redemptorist confrere, venerable Father Alfred Pampalon, C.Ss.R. On Saturday, September 24th we celebrated the 115th anniversary of Father Alfred’s death. For the occasion 25 people from the Fraternity of Saint Alphonsus made a pilgrimage on foot from Quebec city to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre.

Previously, on Saturday, May 14th, we had highlighted the 20th anniversary of the proclamation by Pope John Paul II of the heroic virtues of Father Alfred, which declared him Venerable.

At each of these events more than a hundred people having a special devotion to Father Alfred gathered to hear conferences on his life and accounts of the countless favours obtained through his intercession, especially for those suffering from addictions. Each of these days closed with a Eucharist of Thanksgiving and a candle-light procession to the tomb of Venerable Father Alfred.

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011: More than 200 religious men, women and priests gathered at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre for a memorable study day. Using the theme “In the footsteps of the Redeemer” the day began with a summary of the Redemptorist mission in Quebec, Canada, Vietnam, Japan, Uruguay and Haiti. An historical overview allowed us to discover the missionary life of the Redemptorists, which remains from its beginnings, its present missionary commitments and its vision for the future ever alive.

Moreover, the gathering stimulated daring and missionary creativity for the Redemptorists, the clergy, and religious communities to proclaim the Gospel ever anew.

To enhance this goal the Redemptorists formed a panel in the afternoon on “the challenges and directions for the future of religious life in a changing Church and society.” The topics considered were the following:

1. Religious life in Quebec: challenges and directions for the future (Sister Rita Gagne, O.S.U.).
2. The Redemptorist Mission in North America: challenges and directions for the future (Father Raymond Douziech, C.Ss.R., Edmonton-Toronto province).
3. At the heart of the new Evangelization, men and women enthralled by Jesus: challenges and directions for the future (Father Normand Provencher, O.M.I.).
4. Being sowers of hope today: challenges and directions for the future (Father Mario Boies, C.Ss.R. Provincial of the Redemptorists of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre).

Following a festive banquet, Archbishop Emeritus of Quebec City, Monsignor Maurice Couture, R.S.V., presided at a Eucharist which was followed by a candlelight procession. The day closed with a concert by the vocal ensemble “Arc-en-Sons.”

Thursday, September 29th, 2011: More than 60 Redemptorists from across the world (Quebec, Canada, the United States, Haiti, France, Belgium, Japan, Vietnam), gave touching recognition to the Redemptorists of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre for their 100 years of missionary life.

The province also took the opportunity to highlight the jubilees of religious profession and ordinations of 16 confreres. This was followed by a mass of Thanksgiving in the Basilica presided over by Father Mario Boies, C.Ss.R., provincial superior. During the Eucharist special homage was given to Sainte Anne the patron of our province. A festive banquet in the Monastery brought a close to the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the province.

To look at the pictures, videos, homilies and conferences of the celebrations of our Province visit our website at: www.redemptoristes.ca

I want to thank all the Redemptorist confreres who joined us either with their presence, in thought or prayer to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Province of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. These celebrations were a joyful historical high point for our province. They will be forever engraved in our hearts. Yes, together, and for one another, we were “sowers of hope in the footsteps of the Redeemer.” .

USA
St. Gerard’s Parish, San Antonio TX
Ron Ziuratis and Dr.Pat Hopkins

October 16th, on the feast of St. Gerard, one of our Redemptorist parishes named for him, St. Gerard’s Parish in San Antonio, TX, USA celebrated its 100th anniversary. The theme of the Centennial year was: “Remembering the past – building the future”

The parish is situated in a very historic area in the southern part of the state of Texas. Originally accepted as a base to do outreach to the Mexicans, Redemptorist missionaries went forth far and wide from this parish to minister among the Mexican population surrounding it. Their outreach included ministering in some of the historic mission Churches along the San Antonio River. If you are familiar with American history you might recall the battle that took place at the most famous of all these missions - the Alamo. But throughout its history the parish itself was composed of a blend of immigrants from the Czech Republic, Poland ,Germany, Mexico and Africa.

So each month during the centennial year the parish honored the heritage of its parishioners whose ancestors immigrated from these lands to San Antonio. The feast day of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was also celebrated with a special icon novena as well as the feastdays of our other Redemptorist saints. The parish also conducted a special Redemptorist parish mission.

On the 100th Anniversary Father Jim Shea, pastor, held a special outdoor Mass at the entrance of the Church. The centennial year has also been the cause to do exterior and interior renovations to the Church. The outdoor Mass showcased the renovated stone exterior, which shined brightly in the sunshine. Among the dignitaries present were several former pastors, the auxiliary bishop of San Antonio, Oscar Cantu, and the provincial of the Denver Province, Harry Grile, C.Ss.R

Slovakia
Triple Celebration held in Slovakia
Metod Lukačik, C.Ss.R.

During October the Redemptorists of Slovakia celebrated three important dates in their history: The 90th anniversary of the arrival of the Redemptorists in Slovakia and the founding of the house in Stropkov; the 100th anniversary of the birthday of the first Slovak Redemptorist, Ján Ivan Mastiliak; and the 10th anniversary of the beatification of Redemptorist martyr Metod Dominik Trčka .

Celebration 1:

It all began on Saturday, October 29, 2011 in the village of Nižný Hrabovec for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Ján Mastiliak’s birth. Many distinguished guests were present such as Metropolitan Archbishop of Prešov, Ján Babjak, Milan Chautur, C.Ss.R., bishop of Košice, Alojz Tkáč, archbishop emeritus of Košice, Ján Eugen Kočiš, exarch emeritus of Prague, Father Josef Michalčik, C.Ss.R., provincial of Prague Father Václav Hypius, vice provincial of Bratislava, Father Jaroslav Štelbaský , vice provincial of Michalovce and many other Redemptorist confreres from the two Slovakian vice provinces. Before celebrating the holy liturgy in the Byzantine rite, a bust of Ján Mastiliak was unveiled that will take its place outside the Church in the square that will bear his name. Afterwards there was a conference on the life of Fr. Mastiliak which included personal testimonies from people and confreres who personally knew Fr. Mastiliak. They gave beautiful and powerful witness to his admirable faith and love of God during the course of his lifetime.

Father Mastiliak was born on November 5, 1911 at Nižný Hrabovec. He entered the Redemptorist juvenate in 1922. He made his novitiate in Stropkov in 1928-29. The rest of his formation took place in the Province of Prague. He studied at the Redemptorist seminary in Obořište. He was ordained a priest in 1934 at Uzhorod. From 1937 to 1942 he studied in Rome at the Pontifical Oriental Institute and at the Gregorianum. His return to Slovakia was delayed until 1944 by World War II. For a while he was rector of Michalvoce, but in 1945 he went to be a professor at the seminary in Obořište. After the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, he was arrested in 1950 and went before a special court along with 10 of the most eminent ecclesiastical leaders of Czechoslovakia. He was unjustly condemned to prison for life. Later the sentence was reduced to 25 years. Ultimately he spent more than 15 years in communist prisons in Valdice, Mirov and Leopoldov – one of the longer sentences served among clerics who were imprisoned in Czechoslovakia.

Returning to Prešov after imprisonment, he took up work as a laborer and translator. In 1968 he secretly became the Vice Provincial of the Redemptorists in Michalovce. He held this office until 1981. As a professor, he devoted himself to the Redemptorist students, secretly teaching them the whole of philosophy and theology and preparing them for priesthood, as they could not study officially nor openly in the seminary. Knowing approximately 14 languages, he translated more than 100 popular and theological books for the seminarians. He died in Prešov on September 18, 1989, just as freedom was dawning for Eastern Europe. He is buried in Michalovce.

Celebration 2:
On Saturday afternoon the celebrations moved on to Stropkov and continued there. This small town in the northeast part of Slovakia is the birthplace and first foundation of the Redemptorists in Slovakia. The Redemptorists came to Stropkov in 1921 at the invitation of the bishop of Košice , Augustin Fischer - Colbrie. The house originally contained a mixed community of Latin and Byzantine Redemptorists. Fathers Metod Trčka and Stanislav Nekula returned from the Ukraine in 1921 to be a part of this founding community.

On Saturday evening holy Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Bishop Bernard Bober, metropolitan of Košice. After the Mass in the ancient chapel of the monastery of Holy Trinity we made our way in procession to the nearby Redemptorist Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, where their where prayers and reverencing at the reliquary of Blessed martyr Methodius Trčka, C.Ss.R..

Celebration 3:

On Sunday October 30, we gave thanks liturgically for the 10th anniversary of the beatification of Redemptorist Blessed Metod Trčka, martyr, who lived in Stropkov for many years and became the founder of the Vice Province of Michalovce, and the 90th anniversary of the arrival of Redemptorists in Slovakia.

A jubilant liturgy was held with Archbishop Ján Babjak of Prešov, Bishop Chautur Milan, C.Ss.R., of Košice, Ján Eugen Kočiš , exarch emeritus of Prague, Father Josef Michalčík, provincial of Prague, Father Václav Hypius, Vice Provincial of Bratislava, P. Jaroslav Štelbaský, Vice Provincial of Michalovce and many other diocesan priests and confreres of the Vice Provinces of Bratislava and Michalovce, celebrating 90 years since the arrival and presence of the Redemptorists in Slovakia. Bishop Milan said in his homily: “For a man, 90 years means old age and approaching death; but for a religious community, 90 years is just the beginning of the challenge to become even stronger, and more radiant through the gospel and its particular charism.

We also celebrated artistically. In the morning, before the liturgy, the youth of Sts. Cyril and Methodius parish prepared a presentation on the life and witness of Blessed Metod Trčka. Sunday afternoon various church choirs from Slovakia and the Czech Republic gave a concert.

Today, we have two Slovak Redemptorist Vice Provinces: Bratislava and Michalovce. Bratislava is of the Latin rite and Michalovce is of the Byzantine Rite. There are now more than 80 Slovak Redemptorists living in 8 communities. The Vice Province of Michalovce also has a mission in the Ukraine in Trascarpatia (Koroleva and Uzhorod).

This triple celebration was a beautiful occasion to come together to give thanks to God for His many graces and blessings, and for our own Redemptorist vocation.

ALPHONSIANUM:

Rome, Italy
Alphonsian Academy
Gary Ziuraitis, C.Ss.R.

The Alphonsianum held its solemn opening of the academic year on Monday, October 10, 2011. The Mass of the Holy Spirit began in the Church of Sant’Alfonso at 9:00 a.m. The main celebrant was Father General, Michael Brehl, who by virtue of his office is the Supreme Moderator of the Alphonsian Academy. He was joined at the altar by the President of the Academy, Father Martin McKeever, C.Ss.R. (Dublin), Father Renzo Girardi, Dean of the faculty of Sacred Theology at the Lateran University from whose affiliation the Alphonsianum receives its pontifical status , Father Luciano Panella, C.Ss.R. (Naples), Rector of the Community and Church, and Father Juan José Medina, C.Ss.R.(Bogotá), Director of the Collegio Maggiore,. The body of the Church was filled with concelebrating professors, students and members of the Sant´Alfonso community.

It is the custom on Academy Inaugural Day to gather in the Aula Magna of the Alphonsianum to hear a report from the President on the previous academic year and to have a special lecture. After introductions by the Secretary General of the Academy, Mrs. Danielle Gros, Father McKeever led the attendees through this review of the previous academic year. The Academy this year opened with around 300 students from around the world. A full report on the Academy´s statistics for this year will be available from the Academy for next month´s SCALA after the deadline for registration has passed.

This year´s opening lecture was given by Professor Paulo Prodi, professor emeritus of the Università degli Studi di Bologna (University of Bologna Studies). His theme was: Sin and offense in post-tridentine moral theology. (Peccato e reato nella teologio morale post-tridentina). After the morning long ceremonies, refreshments were served in the Academy foyer.

COLLEGIO MAGGIORE::

Rome
Collegio Maggiore
Gary Ziuraitis, C.Ss.R.

The Collegio Maggiore is an entity of the General House that is not widely known or understood around the Congregation. Some think of it simply as an academic dormitory, or as a house of formation for Redemptorists studying in Rome. It is much more than just a place to lay one’s head after a long day of school. And although it is true that during their stay the members of the Collegio Maggiore take part in special lectures on the life and work of Redemptorists around the world, thus expanding their knowledge and vision of the whole Congregaton, it is not a house of formation as we usually apply the term.

The priests and brothers who make up the Collegio Maggiore are accomplished ministers of the Word and Sacrament. They have a wide span of years of religious profession as Redemptorists and as ordained priests in the ministries of their home Units. The youngest resident of the Collegio is 31. The oldest is 62. So they are not here to receive “formation” in the traditional sense, but to find Redemptorist community in a place that is conducive to study; a place that is sensitive to the academic calendar of classes and exams – and the burdens those bring.

But, as in any Redemptorist community, it has its rules and organizational structure with its corresponding rights and obligations within the context of the greater General House community. Since it is not just a dormitory or hotel for academics, that is why it is assigned its own director, Father Juan José Medina Sánchez, C.Ss.R. of Bogotá, Colombia to provide supervision and guidance.

This year there are 33 members of the Collegio. They have chosen, along with their Unit Superior, and with the approval of the Director of the Collegio Maggiore, to come to Rome and live at the General House while they attend one of the pontifical institutes of higher learning. Eight of them study at our own Alphonsian Academy. But this year’s members of the Collegio also study at such institutes as the Gregorianum, the Angelicum, the Anselmianum, the Teresianum, the Salesianum, the Urbanianum, the Laterano, the Biblicum and the Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem. Eleven are doctoral candidates and the remainder are studying for their Licentiate. A Licentiate program is usually two or three years. The Doctoral program may be three or more additional years of study.

Some students come and finish their Licentiate, go back to their home Units for a period of time, and then return later to do their Doctorate.

This year we have 10 newcomers for their Licenciates and 2 returnees for their doctoral studies:

The Collegio has most of its residents living on the 4th floor of the General House, where they have a small kitchenette and chapel for their convenience. They are also near the rooftop Terrazzo of the building where they can walk out and enjoy tremendous vistas and panoramas of Rome in all directions to inspire them during moments of thinking, reflecting and pausing from their study. The 4th floor generally stays pretty full, so a few members spill over into the general living quarters of the General House. Community prayer and meals are taken with the community at large.

It is one of the unique privileges of living at the General House to rub shoulders everyday with some of the brightest minds and energetic Confreres from around the Redemptorist world - many who are destined to be future leaders. In turn they get to rub shoulders with 66 other veteran Redemptorists from around the world serving in various capacities, experiencing the diversity and giftedness of the worldwide Congregation and the sense of ecclesiastical unity that comes from living in the Eternal City.

We welcome the new Collegio members and welcome back our confreres continuing their studies. To all of them we offer the traditional Italian greeting of success when confronting a tough endeavor - in bocca al lupo! - meaning – “good luck”!
